Sweetwater Tex just had a rattlesnake roundup and 6 teams came in with 13,345 lbs of Western Diamond Backs. The largest Rattler came in at 6`8" caught by Eric Thomas. 10,212 lbs was caught in 2005 and there has been 284,152 lbs caught in the 48 years the roundup has been held. They started having the roundups because the ranchers were having to many injuries to their livestock.

Don't know 'bout y'all, but I'm seein' western boots, belt, and billfold there....which, in MY estimation, is all a snake is good for [OK, maybe some trim on a saddle too.].

Actually, I believe that is an eastern diamond back which is the largest species of rattlesnake! I think that picture was ciculating last year and was from north carolina! Scott

I had the same pic way back last year too and it said that diamondback was by Fritch TX just out N of Amarillo along the Canadian river and Lake Meredith area. Out in the middle of the caprock we have mostly smaller prairie rattlers but on edge of caprock and draws or dry river beds we get the big ones. Guys in SW NM killed a 12 footer the other year with a live jack rabbit in it and had skin hanging on wall at wool exchange.

Haven't seen any yet and don't want to but heard on radio today they had the rattle snake roundup in Sweetwater TX this past weekend. Oh we got some of those other kind down here too in runoff next month for commissioner and council posts in the area. lol.

Arn't they kind of skinny this time of year? wouldn't it be better catch them in the fall when they are fat for better eating?

I'm not catching any to find out lol. I think it's a contest to see who catches the most in pounds and heard the winner caught like 1000 + or - pounds. Maybe they aren't shedding yet and not so feisty? In the fall they are shedding before winter and kinda feitsy.

The snakes were out around here by the hundreds last February. Turns out we elected a minority government.
