Is there any specific problems I need to be aware of with the 1256. Found a nice one. Price is a little steep $9,000. Is this a dependable tractor or a lemon by reputation? Thanks for your help

Thanks Allan in NE....one more thing in reply to CIBF, 03-11-2006 02:52:24
Allan, I appreciate the advice. Oh, if I end up buying her I intend to work her. Probably as our primary tillage, chisel plowing etc.
I just love the look of the old 56 series, you know?
One other question about them though. I was looking at the pictures the dealer had online and saw that there is no top arm on the three point, just the two lifting arms. I feel kind of ashamed to ask this question and I guess it shows my mechanical/equipment knowledge, but how the heck do you hook up to 3pt. equip with that? This tractor is replacing our JD 4020 and the JD had that 3rd arm in the middle to hook up to the top eye of three point implements. My face is red with embarassment for asking this question, but I may as well ask. After all thats what you guys are here for.
Thank you.

Any chance it is a 'two point' Fast Hitch?

CIBF,

This is one of my biggest pet peeves with all the tractor world kingdom.

"Almost" every used tractor that you run across does not have a center link. Wheren' the heck are they all at? :>)

However, dealers usually pull 'em off and store them inside like they do with PTO drive shafts. If they didn't, they would get legs and walk off, so your dealer probably has the center link for it locked up somewhere.

Enjoy your new tractor; you will really be impressed with that brute.

CIBF,

Never heard of an IH "lemon". They were all built to work and "over-engineered" to the max.

So, if you've found a nice, clean 100 horse tractor, the price, although it sounds high, is really not that much of an issue compared to the new ones nowadays.

However, and as a disclaimer, just remember that the tractor is still 40 years old and will no doubt need some attention here and there, especially if it has a lot of hours on it.

Also, they don't do well just putzin' around. Ya gotta make 'em work to keep 'em happy. Keep 'em bumpin' up against the governor and the longer they will last.

Allan
