I know the topic of unskilled parts individuals has been brought up many times but I will post this for your humor. Yesterday I walked into Advanced Auto Parts, walked up to the counter and told the young lad I needed 8 GLOW PLUGS for a 1996 Gmc K3500 Automatic 4x4 6.5 turbo diesel. The lad says no problem walks in back brings out some boxes of auto lite spark plugs. I tell the young lad I need glow plugs he says yeah 6 plugs is there anything else. I say I need glow plugs he says yeah thats waht we have here 6 of them for you. I said well first off its an 8 cylinder. He says "well the computer shows you need 6. I said ok but I dont think those are the right ones. He asks if the vehicle is here I say yes he said lets go look. We go out and he climbs on my bumper w/his muddy feet looks around and he cannot find the spark plugs. Suprise suprise. He says I have never seen an engine like this. I try telling him there are 8 cylinders (counting the number of injector lines) and I need the little round "things" w/the electrical spade connector on them. He says "Ive never seen a spark plug like that". I tell him its a glow plug used to heat up the air to make it start. He goes back inside and pulls out some different spark plugs that he assures me are the correct ones. Also he asked if I would be needing new spark plug wires with those plugs. I saidI dont think those are the right ones either so back out to the parking lot where he tries to locate my spark plugs and wires but they "must be hidden" because he cant find them however we go back inside and he assures me those are the right ones and even shows me the computer. I went down to the dealer and paid through the ***. I know everyone cannot know everything, I also know i do not know much about foreign cars at all, everyone has to start somewhere etc etc, but shouldnt they put some people behind the counters who at least have a basic understanding of how things work and basically waht parts are on what type of vehicles. Like asking for a clutch and they ask you if it is an automatic or manual. After looking at the truck he still tries to sell me spark plugs that he cannot find????? I wish the old guy at the town napa wouldnt have retired. NOw all they sell are 4 inch exhausts for hondas. Ultimatley though the heads of of the story is your local advanced auto parts store has spark plugs for your 6.5 diesel for sale and this week they are ON SALE. Stock up while you can. (

As a tip, glow plugs come in boxes marked spark plugs from autolite and champion and maybe AC. Did you look inside the box? Every now and then a computer listing isn't right and that's when I tell the counter person "it isn't all in the book".

We have a new school district superintentent and he is going to save money by dismantling the auto shop and manual arts department. We have a good program here and they have lots of equipment. THe students also do very well in contest about mechanics. Getting machines repaired is going to get worse rather fast.

That's plain sad.. i think I'd write the owner of the company, and CC a copy to the manager....

You get the same 'dumb' look from most radioshack employees when you walk in to buy a discreet component... unless you are there for a cell phone.. you are on your own..

Funny you should mention that. Radio Shack (or Radio Schlock, as I call it these days) usetabe the place to go for pieces-parts if ya built yer own electronic stuff.

I needed the parts to build a cable to transfer a program from a laptop to a PLC (programmable logic controller) at work. Did manage to find a 9 pin serial DSUB connector, but no cable, no 8 pin DIN plugs, no "breadboard" connectors (where you can change the pinout by moving plugs) and the feller looked at me like I was from another planet when I asked about gender changers...

Luckily my local store still caries some of the good old stuff like breadboards.. wafer/perf board, and etching supplies. They have cut back on some components. Ever time they shrink the section, I go buy all the clearanced parts. i remember when half the store was blister packs of components.. now it it is like... 4 pull out drawers.... weird...

( I call them ratschack.. )

Buy Berus in the AC Delco boxes in reply to thejdman01, 03-09-2006 07:50:35
I don't know if you are aware of this, or care - but there were many changes made in those glow-plugs. You're throwing your money away unless you buy Beru's (or Bosch) with the built in current-limiter - they are just-about burn-out proof. If you buy plugs in the AC Delco box, they will be Berus as long as they aren't old stock. The old ACs were absolute garbage. All the Champions are crap. I noticed recently that the new plugs I bought for my Ford and Volkswagens diesels were also relabeled Berus.

You MAY be lucky he DIDN'T sell you GP's... in reply to thejdman01, 03-09-2006 07:50:35
If you don't know what brands to buy, go to a reputable diesel shop for your GP's.

I won't mention any names here, but I know of two GP brands sold at auto supplies which are much poorer than some more desirable brands for longevity. (They don't last.) If you wind up with a set of poor GP's, they may heat up slower, making for harder, smoky starts. Some crappy units have been known to overheat, and then break off and fall into the cylinder, which can get ugly.

AC-Delco and Bosch dual-coil units are good, as well as a couple of other brands.

The moral if the story is, don't have a zit-faced kid at an auto supply pick and choose the GP's for your $12,000.00 diesel engine. Go to the pro's at a diesel shop, or read up on the subject, and make an informed choice as to what brand and part number to buy, and then, armed with the part #, you can get them or order them at auto supplies, even if they are clueless about looking them up.

As a 6.5 diesel owner, if you are not already a member, I would suggest a (paid) membership to TheDieselPage.com. This subject has been discussed in detail over there, and there is TONS of good information on the board, and in the searchable archives. This and other information may save you the cost of membership a thousand times over. (That being said, I am not in any way associated with the folks behind TheDieselPage, only a satisfied member.)

I had the service manager at the Dodge Dealer where I had bought my Dodge/Cummins new ask me if I wanted to change the plugs while I had the truck in for other service. I said "What kind of plugs, did you mean glow plugs?", seeing as how maybe he thought my truck was the kind of Diesel that needed glow plugs. But he said "Spark Plugs". Now I was faced with gently trying to educate him that my truck was a Diesel and Diesels did not use spark plugs (except on those old Internationals that started on gas then switched to Diesel but I sure he didn't mean those). Let alone the fact that Cummins's do not use glow plugs anyway, but I was trying to give him at least a little bit of credit. They didn't sell very many Diesels there but I would think that the service manager would at least know the basics about Diesels. Needless to say, for engine or fuel system related matters I went elsewhere.

I would sure hope that the service manager would know better. YOu should have said yes and let them "change the plugs" and seen if they "did it" and if they would charge you for it. Make a real real quick assurance waht kind of dealer and technican worked on your truck if they did. Im sure most people have never heard or dont rember the old international diesels with glow plugs. Maybe a few members on here do.

Guess I would have taken the opportunity to educate him a little about diesels and how they work, because, as you point out, "everyone has to start somewhere". Don't know whether I would have bothered just to be a nice guy, but I sure would have before going to the dealer and paying through the ***. I'm sure you could have helped him negotiate the computer by stressing that he needed to find the listings for the diesel version of the vehicle. Lets face it- with the advent of the computer, parts man at the local chain store has become just another minimum wage job, like Wally World- the guys who actually know something or want to make something of themselves soon find a better job elsewhere.

He did type in 6.5 turbo diesel and waht the computer showed spark plugs he did have it in teh computer correctly (year and model) but the point is you have to be smarter then the computer. Remember the good old days when the parts man could go to a whole shelf filled w/books the whole shelf was solid books hed take a book out and flip almost right to the exact page or better yet went right back to the shelf.

That's the point I was trying to make- In the good old days, those guys who knew parts like the back of their hands got paid a living wage, and the reason they were so good is that it was a career job, for life. Now, nobody stays with it long enough to learn anything.
