I'm investgating tractors that would power a 52in. circular sawmill with a PTO.I was told I need at least 70 horsepower to run it with out problems and PTO speed is about perfect for the mill. I would like a fuel efficient one like a John Deere 830 but I was told not to use a two cylinder. Thanks for your time.

Are you going to run direct drive or with a flat belt. I just sold my mill and I ran it direct drive with a 45 hp w6. I was running a 52" blade. On some real hard and dry logs it would bog down. Try and stay away from a vehicale motor if you can do to no governor on them.

What kind of mill??? in reply to thefeltzes, 03-07-2006 09:12:11
We have used the old bell saw mill with the JD 50.....My grandfather like the JD on the belt better than the IH because the JD's had more RPM's. If you have a lane and chase mill you will need around 100HP because of the heavier mill works.

Why not use something like a 350 chevy with a in and out box on it ,you can buy a wrecked car with a good motor cheaper than a tractor tire .

Two-bangers had a bad rep on pto and belt work because they simply don't fire often enough, compared to 4 and 6 cyl tractors. 4-6 provide more even power for those loads.

The only problem with a two cylinder on a belt load is the dumb *ss running the machine. Where a four or six cylinder would stall out before throwing the belt. The Two cylinder Deere will just lug down, hold on and the belt will give before the engine stalls.

I worked at a sawmill years ago, It had a 100hp motor that was electric running a 54" blade. and it pulled it down a time or two on hardwood; and electric would be a more consistant power supply. Just trying to say you might need a bigger horse.

My grandfather used a 720 Diesel on his mill with a 48" blade for many years with no problems.
