My 4020 gas can get more power?

We have a 1967 John Deere 4020 gas. It's been a really great tractor for us. Grandpa had a 4020 gas as well. He didn't like it because it didn't start very good and it never had very much power. It was before my time, but it was probably just wore out for I think that was the one that belonged to a construction company. Anyways, grandpa went to a county fair one time. Some company had, the way he described it, almost a chip for the gas 4020's. I guess it was just something that maybe hooked up to the carburator or the electrical. I have never seen any kind of a system like it before and I can't remember anything about it. Does anybody know what it was or who made these. I wouldn't mind getting one, if they are still around, for our 4020. Any Help? Thanks in advance!

If she isn't making 97HP on the dyno then there is something wrong with it. What is it making now? 1st thing to do is to toss the resistor core plug wires and spark plugs. Use solid wires and Autolite 3116 plugs gapped at 40 thou. Install an electronic Pertronics points replacement set and thier matching six volt coil. No more points to cause trouble. Odds are either the bypass starting circuit has failed, somebody used a 12v coil with a ballast resisitor or the coil polarity is reversed. The only carb that ever worked on any gas JD is a Zenith, Marvel carbs just don't. And they have to set up correctly on a dyno to find the leanest idel and main mixture that doesn't loose significant power. The thermostat has to work and be a 195F unit. The aircleaner has to be clean and the case not collasped from being over tighened. The choke may appear open but the linkage is often out of adjustment. Pull the hose off the carb inlet and be certain it's 100% open. If the manifold heat adjustment will move, crank it over to hot. Of course these tuneups will do ziltch if the compression is low or the cam is worn out.

The only thing I know of for something like that is called a "tune-up kit". Carburetor kit, plugs, points, cap, etc. Put those in and you'd have a sweet running rig assuming everything else is OK. There are no other gadgets that you can put in. Modern rigs, you can put a chip in because they are computer controlled and from the factory they "sandbagg" it so its not up to its full potential so that you can squeeze a little more performance with an aftermarket chip. But not the old classic rigs.

Sounds like they hooked up a spare ETD transmogrifier. I've never seen one on a 4020, though. A neighbor tried one on his 706, but the old red girl's flux capacitor wasn't up to it. MAN, what a MESS!

I wonder if there's still any of those around? On ebay perhaps, or did they all reach half-life and fade out?

Probably a bad muffler bearing caused the problem,Bob.That keeps the ciz wheel from turning as fast as it should
