i just bought a 1980 power king 2418 and the rear tires are on the wrong way assuming this is to improve traction but i am wondering does it really help or are people just crazy?

Reversed tires will wear a lot less on hard road surfaces. Over here, you often see local council tractors with reversed tyres, slashing (brush hogging) the road side. Custom pickers and combines that travel the roads a lot are another example. Also with a picker or combine, if you get bogged, you have max traction when you reverse out. The down side is a reduction in traction when moving forward, so reversing tyres on drive wheels is usually only done when the machine has a lot of road use and their primary use does not require max traction.

Yep, we used to put the tires on our 403 combine on backwards. Whenever we bogged down in a wet spot, we could back out without calling for the 560!

Backward tires are for steering or traction as a drawn piece (as I was taught by my dad anyway).Better mud clean-out w/lugs in normal fashion on drive wheels.Look at newer combines w/o RWA or ground drive spreaders.~brad

Only improves things if you are doing a lot of work by going back wards other wise it hurts traction forwards

I always thought backwards was for hard surface/hiway usage. Also if lots of backing up with loader or 3 point snow blower etc. Just thoughts running through this fragmentet mind of mine.

I have seen the front tires backwards on bucket loader tractors. They are supposed to wear longer. Maybe back is same thing.
