Working on a Deutz BF4L engine on a stump grinder, has a broken timing belt.Does anybody know if the valves can interfere with the pistons on this engine when this happens? Also any body know anything about timing one of these? Thanks.

Guess again If it's a Vermeer or Rayco it's a timing belt. Poor design ,If you don't move the machine control arm before using the side swing ,then the ooerator window frame wipes out the plastic shield and the timing belt,Not sure of the interface w/valves or not but I worked for Vermeer for 25 years and this little occurence can cause catastrophic damage.I believe the engine model is F4911 tho.

When did Deutz ever use a timing belt on their 912 or 913 air cooled engines? The camshaft, injection pump and oil pump are all driven by timing gears on the front of the engine. The only belts that are used on these engines drive the cooling fan and the alternator. Unless this is someting new that Deutz has come out with, I have never seen a timing belt on a Deutz air cooled engine in the 22 years that I have worked on Deutz engines.

Deutz been using timing belt for years but on 1011 models. If timing belt breaks weakest points are pushrods after replacing them and timing belt, engine is good as new.

Maybe you never worked on this model, but it definitely has a cog belt that runs from the crank to the cam.
