I put a new mechanical fuel pump on the 351 Windsor in the F250 and I got the truck to run for awhile. Then it just puked out. Now I cannot get it started. Does the mechanical fuel pump pull gas from the tank or is the gas gravity fed to the pump? I took the steel gas line off the carb. and it does not squirt gas out when I crank the motor. I took the smaller rubber hose off the fuel pump and filled it with gas and then gas squirted out of the steel line when I cranked the motor. I checked for relay switches or anything like that and the truck has none. It seems that I am not getting gas to the fuel pump and I know there is at least 5 gallons of gas in the tank.

Tweeter, first off if you are putting the gas into the flex hose coming from the tank, your pump is working and installed correctly if you are getting gass out of the line at carb.Take you gass cap off, tank might not be venting properly.
I guess I am making an assumption that you have only one tank on your truck.

More info needed

1.Number of tanks
2.If more than one tank, which one are you trying to pull gas from?
3.Have you used Gass Guard in tank?

My email is open email me, I will walk you throught check system.

Might be you have the pump arm on the wrong side of the cam, if it has one . just a thought

The fuel pump must draw the gas from the tank so I would guess that you may have a pinhole in the line between the tank and the pump. You could try and run a rubber line from the pump into a gas can and see if it starts. If it does then I would inspect the gas line and pickup tube for holes. If you end up replacing the gas line be sure to use steel line and keep the rubber sections to a minimum, usually 12" or less each. HTH Jf

T, Thought the 1987"s started the fuel injection era, you should have an electric fuel pump somewhere? Since you have a carb, look for the filter between the pump and carb base, may be plugged. You may have to crank the engine a while to get the fuel up to the carb.

It is not fuel injected and it has a mechanical fuel pump not electric. I replaced the stone fuel filter at the carb inlet. There isnt any other filters along the frame rails either.

Hi, I never heard of a F-250 tractor! LOL! I think you may have posted in the wrong section. there is a section on this site for trucks with lots of good information, and very helpfull folks.

Wish I could help you, but Ford quit making a good truck after 1972 as far as I"m concerned. Just my 2 cents worth. I own a great 1964 Ford 1 Ton with the best engine I thank they ever made, a 300 six! LOL! Goodluck to You! Gaplowboy
