Anybody else have them? Most of our machines are grease worm free, but I think one of our tractors may have an infestation starting. My dad mentions that a few of the places he's worked at have had trouble with grease worms too. Have any of you had experiences with grease worms?

When we have them, we just spay or neuter them. In a few short years the whole species dies off.

You need to check your grease gun for them before putting them on the zerk. To check for them in the grease gun just hit the handle fast and hard while pointing in a safe direction. Man, some of those adult grease worms are 6-8 feet long!!!

I would think that snow snakes would be a bigger problem up in your area. Do they really only come out in the winter and then hibernate in the summer?

No, they're just really hard to see. In winter, they turn white to camoflage themselves. In summer they turn back to brownish-green. Really tough to see, them snow snakes.

Stan - Maybe you don't know this --- but there really are "snow snakes". The native Indians here in Ontario have snow snake games every winter. This consists of long wooden shafts, highly polished and thrown down especially constructed grooved runs made of packed snow. Believe it or not, these snakes have been known to travel up to nearly a mile or more!!

Well, I have a friend in Cache Creek, B.C who is a serious curler (if that't the proper term), so I'm not surprised at what you're telling me.

When I was in the Navy back in the 60's we had a bucket of prop wash the worms got into. It killed them real quick. I guess they can't swim. Stan

Bet ya had fun finding the `grease zerk `, and equal fun `cleaning`it prior to greasing..... And be sure to regrease OFTEN, as apperantly the capacity to receive grease is superior to the grease gun's capacity to empty and reload....Just be sure to do a GOOD job. Good comment, one of the best on YT that I have seen (in 3 years)..... Large grin!!!!! !!!!! ..... ..QR..

Grease worms used to crawl out of several grease fittings on our old 8N...

I haven't seen any here in New England, think it's
too cold of a climate. I don't think they winter
over here. We do however have quite a few rearend
borers. Heavy infestation out on Cape Cod around
Provincetown. As I understand it your rearend is
never the same.

You better get control of them before they get into the muffler oil. That's when the big trouble starts!

Rus, I know what you mean. I got them in my muffler oil one time and they took out all the bearings on the mufflers on two different tractors. What a mess. Harley

They're pretty small, and almost the same color as the grease, so really hard to spot. And you might have to dig down into the grease a bit to find them. What is hamful is their excrement (ie, poop) as it contains acids that break down the grease and destroy it's lubricating ability. If you have a lot of them, you should be able to rub a little grease between your thumb and forefinger and feel the little chunks of poop.
