I joined my local volunteer fire department in 1992, and the volunteer rescue squad in 1993. Currently hold state and national certification as EMT-B, and run many of the 160+ squad calls a year. I am also AHA certified CPR/AED and First Aid instructor. About 18 months ago, working with a friend who is an MD in the next county, we set up a non-profit to raise money for training. Volunteers were reluctant to pay the $100 up front for EMT training, and have to go out of the county two nights a week for 5-6 months. With the money we raised we offered free training, and brought the instructors to the students. So far we have trained and certified a dozen new EMTs for the two counties, have 11 more in a new class, and I have taught CPR/AED and first aid to about 75 citizens, again at no cost to them. That's how we are solving the volunteer recruitment in out area, anyway. Adding about 4-6 new EMTs a year in each county isn't bad!

Been an active volunteer firefighter for 32 years, was Assistant Chief then Deputy Chief for 18 years. Have been Chief of the industrial fire brigade at work for 26 years.

Now semi-retired from the volunteer fire company, that is: my pager is solar powered, doesn't work at night anymore ;)

Volunteer for 22 years, Chief for 6, still very involved. I've been thru every position at least once except President (Conflict of Interest while I am still a Fire Commissioner in our District). Also have 2 brothers in same Fire Company, 1 was chief 4 years after me.

Volunteer FF / 1st Responder with a small town department in MN. About 100 calls per year, mostly medical.

I'm the training officer for the department, so I appreciate any ideas that you have to share.

I became a volunteer for my small town back in 1979. Around 1984 I joined the Emergency Fire and Rescue for the chemical company I worked for. The experiences were wonderful. We certified on different types of rescues with the plant along with over 80 hours a year of OSHA certified training. We spent many days at LSU Fire & Rescue school to get these certifications. I retired back in 01 and moved away from that area. I really miss the action. Maybe one day I will go

I've been with my dept. since August '87. Came up as entry/attack, engineer, now Asst. Chief for the last 5 years. We are paid on call, run about 250 runs per year. Do all extracation for our E.M.S. and also very envolved with meth lab clean-up. 16 members, 2 stations, 110' quint, 1 tanker, 4 pumpers and 1 rescue mini pumper unit. Most rewarding thing I have ever done, enjoy trying to help people in need.

I'm on the local volunteer department about a year and half now. We're pretty rural though, and only do a half dozen calls a year or so, unless we get called in for mutual aid on a major scene. Then it's generally just for water supply purposes. I'm often first or second in the station, so I'm often gone with the first truck. So far, so good.

I am the chief of a volunteer fire dept. in the northeast part of Arkansas. It is a municipal dept for a town of about 360. we also cover about 130 sq miles of rural area. Two stations, nine apparatus and 20 volunteers. We make about 100-120 First Responder calls and 40 fire calls a year. One of my sons is also on the department.

We are about to start construction on a new station. Will be 50X100 with five bays. Boy, will we ever have the big head once we move into that. It's been a long time in the making.

Stay safe.

I've been in the fire service for 21 years. I was a aux. FF for Columbus Oh. for six years before I got on full time. I got my EMT in '86 and Paramedic in '95. I'm also a rescue and haz-mat tech. We have an engine, medic and heavy rescue at our station. I have been on the local volunteer dept. for three years so I work on both ends of the spectrum. The vol. dept. took 118 runs last year, as opposed to my full time dept. where I had a day last year where we took 35 runs in one day. I'm also a medic in the National Guard.

Been volunteer then paid and back to volunteer again. Great bunch of professional people to work with even though volunteerism seems to be at a all time low in many of our small towns and communities. Doing air lift transfers and working with pedi units was an amazing experience! I'm looking forward to area fire school in April again and hope it rains before then so I can go.

I think its about 26-27 for volenteer fire, 25 for EMS, and getting tired of the non practical and not aplicatable crap handed down from way up the line. Not to mention homeland security and there new blue tank thinking. They are going to get rid of all the small town departments soon. I certianly aprove of saftey measures, but the stupidity of our state capital seems to be getting worse. Just got back a few munites ago from EMS call and there was two of us. I was the only one for three out of the first five this year. For a town of 700 we are out of ideas to find new recrutes. How do some of you other units get some one to volenteer. We advertize that starting pay is at the same level as 25 yr veterans. Also how many of your units have the blue tanks already, or when do you feel you will be going that route? Many things trouble me, but the insurance has finaly got to the half way mark of our total yearly budget. Dave NE IA

Dad and I work together in our repair shop. He"s the local fire chief, I"m the ambulance director. He"s been on the fire dept for 24 yrs, retired from the ambulance four yrs ago with
19 yrs. The year he retired, they made him fire chief. I"ve been on the ambulance 8 yrs, 5 as director. Our local fire dept is volunteer, the amb service is paid on call. Fire runs about 40 times a year with rescue calls. Amb about 200.
We both really enjoy it, it"s fun to work with a bunch of people who are just there to do good.

In Ontario Canada with Candu heavy water units that refuel while at 100% power. Mostly Pickering but now stationed at the Bruce Nuclear site. I do some work now at Darlington & Pickering during outages. We make the tritium as a byproduct which is used inside "glow in the dark" scopes, gauges, exit lights etc. A whole whack of cobalt 60 too. Man is that stuff ever hot. Glows a bright blue when under water.

I am not a Firefighter but I have the utmost respect for all of you folks that are.

A lot of people made a big deal about how the Firefighters who were killed at the World Trade Centers were heroes. No disrespect and not to take anything away from what they did ,but I think that ALL of you folks are heroes. Those guys were just doing their jobs like they did EVERY day. They gave their all that day just like they would if it had been an apartment fire or anything else. You guys and girls risk your lives ever time you go to a call and having been through a house fire myself , I want to thank you all.

Let's never forget all of those brave souls who died on 9/11 and also all of the other unsung heroes who risk it all every day.
