I have a Case 580C. Recently it started giving troubles starting. I replace the starter becasue I was told it was bad,...and it still won"t attempt to start, solnoid will click only. I replaced the battery with a new one, still won"t turn the engine over. I tried jumping it when the jumping vehicle was off, and no luck. But when I jump the backhoe with the jumping engine (14 volts produced) on, the backhoe will start. Bottom line is I need about 14 volts to start my tractor, it will not start with 12.9, a normal battery charge. Any ideas? It is driving me crazy! Thanks in advance.

I think Old and bob are on the money.. either bad or wimpy cables.. bad cable ends.. bad/dirty ground point.

I would almost bet you have either bad battery cables or bad connections at the cables. I would replace the battery cables, use nothing less then #1 cables or even better 0 or 00 cables. I just fixed that sort of problem on a 580B and rewired the whole thing. It had around 10 wires on it that didn't go to any thing and looked very bad that way, plus who knew what was going on with all those wires.

There may be a poor connection between the key or start switch and the starter solenoid, so full battery voltage is not getting to the solenoid. It could even be a poor connection involved in the "neutral safety" system (if it has one).

Also, I am not real familiar with the 580. Some tractors have a small starter solenoid, much like a Ford "fender-mount" starter solenoid ahead of the big starter solenoid. The start switch activates the little solenoid, which, in turn. switches battery voltage to the big solenoid on the starter. If your unit is set up like that, there may be a problem with that solenoid, or it's associated circuitry. You could be hearing the little solenoid "click" without power getting to the big solenoid. I have seen this more than once on tractors so equipped.
