My brother-in-law has a Caddy with the Northstar engine. Cadillac says normal for his to use a quart of oil in 2,000 miles. Anybody know anything as to why?

I have owned 3 Northstars and runthem all well past 200,000 mi. All used about 3/4 qt between oil changes 2-3K. It is a big engine and the oil sump and lines hold close to 10 qt.

Yah, they are a modular item and a booger to work on. I use them as courtesy cars at the airport. If it blows a head gasket or looses radiator water, it will go 50 moh for 50 mile and not damage the engine. My customerr can always get back here to pay his bill!

That's just more TV commerical talk !

If those things get hot what you end up with after you refill it is a blowed head gasket. Very expensive and difficult repair on those.

I would say that it is not typical for a Northstar to use that much oil.

The question is not whether or not this is "normal", but rather whether or not your brother-in-law can get Cadillac to replace the engine under warranty. I would say that he will have to complain long and loud before they will replace the engine. But does he really want that? The new engine might have better oil consumption, but what else will the mechanic mess up during the engine swap?

Yep,

You nailed it. Both Ford and GM will tell you that any oil consumption up to a quart in 700 miles is considered normal.

Owners seem to look at it a little differently tho. :>)

Personally, I can't remember running across any oil burner since the computer controlled fuel systems came out in '85 or '86.

Been through that, normal is pretty much what ever it takes to get it out of the shop without opening the hood.

Had a 1992 Grand Marquis that lost a quart of COOLANT every 3000-4000 miles and was told that was "normal" along with the dirty sludgy oil I was draining every 3000 miles. Finally "made" them look for it before it went out of warranty, had found that it had a "sand hole" in the block from a poor casting.

I have a 93 Chevrolet 1500 with 4.3 litre V6.
It has right at 200,000 miles on it and it does'nt use any oil between oil changes (3000miles). It puffs smoke out the exhaust
on cold startup. Was told it was worn valve
stem seals, but it still is at full mark at
oil change. Wish I could buy another truck
that is good as this one has been. Don't
know about the Northstar engine. I have another
2000 Chevrolet truck with V8 and it uses almost
a quart between oil changes.

My wife has a Buick Le Sabre, about 60K, had 145K on last one, neither has ever leaked or burned oil. I have a 2500 Silverado duramax, we both go 3000 between changes and no oil consumption. I tow equipment trailers loaded all the time plus our fifth wheel traier. Hear the new Buick (name?) has the NorthStar. If it uses oil guess she will get something else.

Have put lots of miles on 2 different Northstars, they never used ANY oil. Never leaked any either.

My Saturn uses about a quart every 1000 miles. (the car runs okay, I guess) My 97 Escort used about 1 quart every 4000 or so miles. That escort was a great car, cheap and good.

Hold on, wait a second. That new (within a few years)engine is supposed to burn oil?? I though an engine burning oil was a BAD thing. Jeez I couldn't count the number of times I've cursed oil consumption in a tractor/mower/automobile. Why do they do that? I'm confused.

Back in the thirtys the Buick straight 8 used oil. It was my understending that you were supposed to place one oil ring in backward so the it would use oil. Supposed to give longer life. If you think about it for a while it makes sence.

This has nothing about the burning oil problem. I had a 48 Chrysler with the Straight 8 engine, while I was in High school. The hood was way out in front. Stan

Had a '46 Chrysler windsor that came with a six in the straight 8 engine room. It was nice, I could stand between the grille and radiator and work on it (which was a daily thing)when it was raining. Buddy said it looked like the Battle ship "Missouri"!

Yup I would say that is normal. My techs hate to get into Northstars also. We do some water pumps on them though.

It is not limited to Cadillac. A friend of mine bought an Expedition and it was using 1 qt/1000-1200 miles. Ford said that it wasn't abnormal although since it went to arbitration they said they would extend his factory warranty longer for free. Not sure what good that would do if they didn't honor the original warranty better than that!

If he only uses 1qt in 2000 mi. he's doing good ! I think the bulletin from GM says it allows 1 qt in 1000 miles. Some are bad at using oil some aren't alot of them leak really bad too. The techs really hate to work on those for anything major like that.

Here at work we sell Buick and Cadillac and the Buicks hold up far better.

In 1953 it was considered good for a brand new Chevy six to use a quart in 1100 miles. In 1970, we had a brand new 292 six that used a quart in 4000 miles. I had a Ford pickup with a 360 and about 80,000 miles that got 1500 to 2000 miles on a quart. My Cummins Diesel does better than that, but then I also have a Toyota with nearly a quarter million miles that gets about 600 miles on a quart. it was a lot worse than that before I did the valve seals. The oil consumption depends on a lot of factors, temps, type of use, how near you are to needing an oil change, etc. I should think a Northstar should do better than a quart in 2000 miles, but then I don't know, with these newer high tech engines and all. Just some ramblings and benchmark numbers for my $0.02.
