Sounds like a pretty good deal even at the Buy It Now price. I bet it does not make it to the end of the normal auction process. In this day and age a person can fly coast to coast in a few hours, and if you shop carefully you can do so for a few hundred bucks. In my opinion, that makes buying (or at least paying for) an item of much value, before you see it, pretty much unnecessary. If I was interested in that tractor and it was anywhere I could get to, I"d use the buy it now, tell the seller I"d be there to pick it up in a matter of hours, and I"d pay for it when I got there and found it was indeed as the seller discribed and what I wanted. If it turned out to be not as described, I"d walk away. Seller could give me bad feed back if they wanted but if that ever causes you any problems, most people will look at what it was you bought and listen to why you got the feedback you did and the feedback deal won"t hurt you much if at all.

So let me ask how Reliable is the 4020 compared to the 4010. Because on the other side of town there is a 4010 for $5,500.00 and that is delivered to my door step.

the PTO is much stronger and trouble free--still 24 volt system?? works good when it is in good shape--hard to work on if you haven"t been around them---need 2 chargers to boost start--the front end looks good and it is a John Deere--warm it up look for blow-by on the rear right corner of the engine is the vent tube from the valve cover--if you plan on pulling the Bush Hog and mow down 4 inch trees you better buy a D7 with a PTO

Hmmmm you are the second person to have a negitive comment on the PTO of the 4010. It seem to reason that I might want to stick with the 4020 instead of the 4010. But they just COST SO MUCH MORE....Oh well might be worth it...
Is there any other advantages to the 4020 over the 4010? It has been rumored that the 4020 was the best tractor ever made...

4010 PTO is fine. Just make sure the 4 bolts on the stub shaft are always tight and you won´t have any problems with it.

Looks like a pretty nice tractor. Checking completed listings shows a 4020 recently sold for $12K+ and 2 more at $8K+. Several ended at under $8K and did not meet the reserve.
You can get a good deal on ebay if you are careful. I got a Honda Rancher ATV with only 104 miles on it at a good price. And like you, it was close enough I could go look before I bought.

How are you able to contact them only knowing the city and state? There's no way of knowing name/addess, is there? Glenn F.

You send them an ebay generated message with your phone number or asking for thier phone number. Doing that, it's up to them to make the next move.

If you do go see the tractor, ebay frowns heavily on a private sale. They still want thier money, after all. If they catch you at it, you can be kicked off ebay, losing your rating. It takes a long time to build a good rating on ebay.

I recently went to see a tractor on ebay located very near me. It's a good way to know if it is a patch and pawn machine or a genuinely good piece of equipment.

Ther"s a "contact seller" in the column on the right. You just email them for the info.

Most of the ones that look like that I have seen go for $10,000 at least. "Looks" like a nice tractor. If it's that close an inspection wouldn't take that long. Harley

I just got burned on an eBay tractor. Be careful. Guy wasn't available to let me see it in advance (first red flag). I bid anyway based on his representation as to "a little white smoke [when first started]" and "good mechanical condition." Regrettably, I "won" the auction. Long story short, I sent a check and went to pick it up. It didn't appear to be in as good a condition as he represented but I'm not the kind to back out of a deal lightly. It smoked a ton and stopped cold right after I drove it out of his gate. The guy just said "your tractor" so I'm suing for deceptive trade practices.

Can anyone tell me if there is a standard or definition for levels of "mechanical condition" in tractors? Do excellent, good, fair, poor, etc. mean anything?

Thanks

Thanks for your support. If anyone can point me to some generally accepted definition of mechanical condition, it would sure help.

You say you are suing, so I assume you have a lawyer. You would get a lot better legal interpretation of such statements from him than you would get here.
