We have a moderately inexperianced hired hand. Dad works off the farm and I live 100 miles away so he needs to be self sufficient. Two weeks ago, he took this unit out to cut wood and slid the trailer into a tree. After they pulled it out, he was told not to take it to the woods anymore. Apparently he forgot. This week, he put the tractor into the tree.

Broke window - $75

Broke cab top - $275

Broke battery and battery box - $150

Broke nose piece - $250

Hired help crawling out the window, uninjured - priceless

We're glad he isn't hurt from the accident but would now like to hurt him ourselves...

That will only take 30 weeks for him to pay you back at $25/wk.

I now work alone except at planting time and I have a very experienced operator. Back when I was farming a bunch of ground I used a couple of the neighbor kids and then as my 4 grandsons got old enough they were tractor and truck drivers never had one bad experience lucky I guess. But I always cautioned them, and they all say they got there work from working on the farm.

That's one of the reasons I'm so glad I sold my business. I always hated putting a help wanted ad in the paper and having to pick through the parade of doofuses that showed up.

I am a firm believer that "poor help" is worse than "no help". Maybe that's why I work alone.

Amen, Brother! I have always preferred to work alone on just about any project. There is less chance for things to go any way other than the direction I intended. Sometimes problems still occur, but at least I know EXACTLY who to be upset with (Me) and I can chew myself out as long as necessary. Plus I gotta pay for my mistakes myself, which works out OK. I've had occasion where the guy I was working with was like having two good men not show up.

I've needed help for years (me and dad) but everytime we try someone out we always spent more time trying to teach them how to do it --- end up doing the job while they watch. and we're out the $8 or 10 per hour.

A shortage of hired help is the reason I have downsized my operation. I have had good help over the years but I've had a lot I'd have been better without. We currently have an oilfield boom in our area (nearby actually) so that makes a farm worker even harder to find.

well the workers here are not a problem

I can count 10 guys that want to help .... not expensive help really but most cant do but drive... and with the big wide equipment... they are dangerous.
