You made an excellent choice. You should almost be able to sell tour packages when you get your retro-ranch up and running.
Back to trucks; I've been kinda kicking this ol' binder around, that's been sitting on an area dealer's lot. Now dear Allan. I am most relieved that you have realized what you have done wrong. Fortuneatly for you (who else??) I have the solution. Just head east over my way, and with that service and the truck (after all it is only a GM, not IH ) I will call the tardy commission (which is still due, see previous post..... ..... ..... .) even. Heck, I will even run you back to the border..... .Now this is a real way for you to kill two birds with one shot. Be sure to fill up with gas before leaving New York. Thank you..... ..... ..... .

Had a 1976 GMC 6500 with a 366 and a 5x4 on air. Good truck as you had lots of gears for field hauling. Power was OK. Had a 14 foot gravel box taht had sides resulting in a 550 bushel capacity. Needless to say, there were no close csales, and the DOT weren"t bothering back roads then. Can we all say together, OVERLOAD. Looks like a good unit..... ...QR..

Congrats, that is a nice one, seems these can be found reasonably, I'll bet you did well on the price, but the best thing is the low mileage on them, that is a nice clean unit, can't wait to see it in the field with a load of grain on !

Hi Billy,

No, it didn't come cheap at all; fact is, it brought a pretty high dollar, me thinks. There were four other guys who also wanted it and we had a bit of a tussle going on there for quite some time. :>(

Thing of it is, I was startin' to run out of daylight here. I gotta plant oats this spring, been lookin' for a year for a good truck and was startin' to get a little disperate.

This is the second low mileage truck I've went after at an auction; the last one brought $10,500 and I bailed out on that one, but did learn that day that it would probably take a good $10 or $11K to buy a decent one.

Luckily, this one was "somewhat" cheaper.

Truck has really been taken care of; has a new windshield, new brakes and a new hydro-vac; also, I can tell it has spent the biggest share of it's life just settin' inside the quonset.

Darned price still stung a little tho, but I guess it is just like our old tractors and turned out to be way, way better than the price of a new Top-Kick.

Re: So That's What I'm Doin' Wrong! in reply to Allan In NE, 02-26-2006 11:36:37
No kidding, I found myself in dire need of a truck last fall, and am always interersted in single axles, so I am always window shopping, looking, comparing, although I did finally get one, just upgraded all the tires and wheels on it, I've still got more work to do on it, will be in for over 5000, when said and done but am also hoping the business allows for an upgrade, so the wheels are always turning when it comes to trucks and seeing what's up for sale. I know it's not polite to ask $ questions, but figured it was not as high as that from what I've seen and looked at so far. You always see these old fire trucks with no miles on them, propane powered ones and so many others under $5000, which may deceive one into thinking you can usually find a decent single axle relatively inexpensive, even if it's just a chassis to put a body on. Sometimes you have to be at the right place at the right time, one week after I bought mine, almost the same truck went $500 less on e-bay and half the miles, several hundred miles closer, I had to laugh. I was under a tight budget, always a challenge when $ are limited.

An auction sure brings top dollar, but what you have is also a solid truck with no major problems or excessive wear, and of course a lot less then a new one equipped the same, and when the competition steps in at an auction you get the privilige of paying top dollar. I've seen a lot of old ford grain trucks go inexpensively, some in similar condition, but wonder if they would bring a higher price at auction. A C-60 with the 366, 5+2 is a great truck, and when any of them are kept under a roof, used at harvest time, probably does not matter so much the brand, it's the low mileage and usage that makes them great for the money. I have not seen a lot of C series 60's in that shape, that is a really nice truck in the photo ! No matter what, a single axle is a very handy thing to have, I don't know how our place did without one all these years, such a pain to rely on someone else, hay, sawdust, what have you, I can move implements back and forth, also the tractor, really appreciate having one now. I think it's worth it in the long run, one less project for you, as you seem to have a few going LOL ! So even at top dollar, I think you got a great buy, plenty of time to check out how it runs before harvest time. Mine likes gas stations too, has a small behind the seat tank, probably 20 gallons or less, so I get to visit them often, don't much matter though, might cost a little more to run, but just having a truck when you need one is the important thing I think.

Yep,

I hear ya. I can't even imagine a farm without a truck.

I've had taggers and tamdems also, but the trouble is, those guys really have a habit of turning into a white elephant durinjg the off season. Plus, you can never touch one for less than 25, maybe 29 grand?

Single axle is bad enough, but at least they are a little more handy around the place. :>)

Does it have the 366 with 5 and 2? Sure looks nice, I have two of them, 74 and 77 models, just keep running anf hauling if you can keep the gas in them,LOL.

Mornin' Scott,

Yes, it's a 1976 one-owner C-65 with 42K miles.

366, 5 and a 2 with an automatic side closer. Also, that's probably why it has the two saddle tanks. :>)

The old box really needs some attention and I've got to oil that darned floor too. Those beets are really rough on a truck, so this one doesn't look too darned bad considering it is 30 years old.

Like a local auctioneer says, if you can't undstand what I'm saying, just raise your hand!
Looks like she was only driven on Sundays by a little old lady. May have some years on it, but it sure looks almost new. Looks like you really found a good one. With both hoist systems you are all set for whatever you need. Don't think you went wrong at all.

Oh WOW Allan, That is way cool!!!!! ! So..... Are ya gonna grow beets? Is there a special beet variety that they can use in making paint? like say IH 2150? That is one swell looking truck. much prettier than my old binder. But one more question....Does it smell like mice? I have two of those pine tree freshners in mine trying to mask the smell.

Hi Howard,

I haven't been within 250 miles of the old truck.

I have a friend over there who has bought a lot of stuff for me in middle Colorado and who I'd trust to the end of the earth.

So, we double teamed this one over the phone; it went a lot higher than we thought, but he knows the prior owner and checked it out pretty darned good.

Yep, you read my mind. That box is getting a couple of coats of IH red, that's fer sure. :>)

I think blue is a natural color for a Chev. The Chev bowties are usually blue.

You got a good one there.

Yeah but,

I sure wanted that Tempte beet box. Also, nice part is that it's equipped with two hoist systems; it has both side and rear dump.

Told ya I was stuck in the 70s. :>)

Ol' boys over in Colorado kinda worked me over a little on it tho. Oh well, it was still cheaper than I could have bought one around here. :>(

Hi Brian,

I'll just use an old broom and used engine oil. I do it 'bout once a year.
