JD 4020 diesel power shifts are great to operate but a little hard on fuel if you ask me. Plus the initial cost along with the cost of those "green" parts can really make you think twice. The IH 856 or 826 were great tractors. the 826 was one of the cheapest running tractors I've ever owned. But if you are looking for the best value for the money, anything with the perkins AT6-354 ar A6-354 would be a great buy. I had an MF 1135 that would take plenty fo fuel under a full load but put out a solid 145 hp on the dyno. But planting and other light work she would literally sip fuel. The cab was as comfortable as a JD soundgard and just as quiet.

I would have to be dead or blind before I would own anything except John Deere. The guy I work for owns two Case. I hate to drive them. Uncomfortable and noisy. I used to own two JD and two International. Had to sell them and the farm when the old lady ran off.

WOW!! alot of good answers here this helps me make a BETTER decision...I was leaning heavily toward the D19 gas but now Iguess I need to look for a diesel maybe that JD 4010 is not so bad for 5,500 bucks it was in ROUGH shape but it DOES have a NEW rebuilt motor in it though..

I don't think you'd be sorry about the D-19. However with JD prices what they are, a $5500, 4010 with a new overhaul should be a good investment. Even if you put a little more money into it, it looks to me like you could get it all back if you ever wanted to. It's hard (although not impossible) to say bad things about how crazy high JD prices seem to be, when they seem to stay that way year after year. I bought a Corvette one time for way more than I could have gotten a lot of other nice cars. But 7 years later, when I sold it, I got a whole lot of money back. Same deal with John Deeres it seems to me.

If you are talking most horsepower for the $$ spent, then it's got to be the Allis D-19, both gas and diesel in most areas of the country. About 70 hp for $2000 in a gas tractor or $3500 in a diesel tractor. About $28 per horsepower in gas and $50 per horsepower in diesel. In a few parts of the country some Olivers might be in the running, but I don't think anything else will get close to that on a regular basis. A 4020 Deere can cost you $100 per horspower pretty regularly from what I see. Good tractor though, you can't argue with that.

Lets see. Diesels, I would have to say for the low end, the old D17 series 4 diesel we had. It was a great baling tractor, heavy, and hardly gave any problems. Had its first overhaul 2 years before we sold it, and that was after being on a farm where we would put about 400 hours on a tractor a year easily. For the top end of that for diesels would have to be my allis 7000 black belly. Not as heavy as the 7010. However, the weight is the perfect amount fo the engine and tranmission. It is simple to work on, and the most smooth running tractor I have ever driven. It is heavier built than my uncles 7200 deere, I took it over and we compared them. Just look at the allis HD front end vs the front end on the deere of the same size, over double the size. Also, allis had the best castings of any tractor company. The same castings that is my rear end housing or tranmission housing is made from the same people who designed the castings for the turbines in the Hoover Dam. For gassers, not really sure, but would have to say the D19 gas is supposed to be a great gasser. The 262 is said to have made a great overbuilt gas engine. Also, I bet the 190xt gas with a 301 gas is a real smooth motor considering how smooth the turbo diesel is. Thats my list.

Best tractor ever made in the low end of that range is the Ford 5000, honorable mention to the Massey 165 and the Deere 2510. Best tractor ever made in the upper end of that range is any one of these five: Deere 4020, Ollie 1850, IH 856, Allis Chalmers OneNinety XT, and Case 1070 Agri-King.

Hi,

I'm totally color blind when it comes to tractors. I just plain like 'em all, as long as they aren't equipped with front wheel assist.

However, if I could find a restored 1955 JD 60 or 70 gas, wide front, think I'd like to have one just for the pure enjoyment of the thing.

Just think they are neat old tractors.

I would agree that the Massey 1100 is a good value for what you pay for one. I like it better then the 4020 powershift I had. I also have 2520 and 3020. I really don't think the JD's are a good value compared to other tractors of the same vintage. Considering they are about twice the price of similar tractors, they certainly arn't twice the tractor. I work on all kinds of tractors from the 60's and 70's in my shop. They all have their good and bad points. I grew up on Deere tractors, but I'm becoming more fond of the Massey tractors as time goes by. A few models that would be on the top of my list are: Massey 1100, 175, 180; Case David Brown 1210, 1410; International any model from 656 to 786, or the 74/84 series; Ford 5000 to 7000 series; Too many other brands and models to list. When it comes to gas tractors. I'd only put gas in A JD two cylinder if I already owned one.

When i bought my Case 930, I tried to buy a 4020. Was thousands higher. BIL got a 1100 same time, its still running. I think its the Perkins engine that i am impressed with. I Would buy a Ford 5000 today if I could find one priced right. New tractors scare the H out of me--who makes them and where for parts in a few years?. Course I don't need any at all now.

I bought an 1130 Massey last fall for $4900. I was looking at a 4320 Deere but couldn't find one that was field ready for less then $9000. The 1130 impressed me so much that when someone offered me $11,000 for my 4020 I sold and found a nice Massey 1100 with a new Koyker loader at auction for $7500. Those Perkins are good engines, I don't worry about cold starting or my fuel bill so much anymore.

When ever about good tractors, don't forget the Massey 1100. For the money, my Case 930 comfort King was tops.

Ken, I'll second the 930 comfort king used mine to bale 400 tons of hay per year, 1986 thru 2004, before that we had used it to farm 300 acres of wheat. Dad bought it new in 1966 while I was in the Army. Was only around two 1100's both had lots of problems.
Pick for gas tractor is IH B414 bought new in 1962 and still strong, only one clutch back in 1968 and a new hydraulic pump in 2005. Hour meter quit at 6000 hours back in 82

Prolly an Oliver 1850 or John Deere 4020 although the Oliver will be less expensive. Heck I am not real sure there is a best one as most everything built back in the mid to late 60"s will last forever as evidenced buy them alll still being used.

4010D is what I have and by choice. Sad tale to relate, loss of another 800 acres of cropland. Fellow I bought my 4010 from called, he is selling a 4040. Two years ago he fixed his son up with the farm so he could retire (he is 72). Last fall the son contracted the 800 acres to a timber co and it will be planted to trees. The pasture land is leased out. He really seemed sad on the phone. I would be too. Have a good day--

Yes, better trees than in a developers hands, I can't reiterate that enough, we have 5 huge developments on the table, including a superwalmarts, and we already have one less than a mile from where the new one is proposed. All proposals are for zoning variance approvals to change from agriculural to residential or whatever they call it, with the potential for more developments, our entire town is at the threshold of being taken over. I wish there was an answer that could work financially and keep suburbia out and some kind of agriculture in, don't seem likely though.

Interesting question, would love to add to it, and for what purpose, tillage, harvest, baling, chores, loader work, does everyone prefer their choice of tractor for, that may complicate things too much though ! I can't answer for the big HP ones, but I've always liked smaller utility size but close to 50 HP or a little more, Ford hundred and thousand series, JD industrial models 301, and up, I.H., M-F, M-M, Oliver and so many others in that size range, it does seem anything from the mid-late 50's to early 70's was good, more a preference thing than a quality thing.

The best tractor is the one that is paid for!
As to the 800 acres. Better to have it grow trees than houses or strip malls.
