What are the advantages and disadvantages of running Rice and Cane tires(20.8x38) on a 2wd tractor primarily used for tillage?

Will this limit by ability to use R-1 duals in the future if we decided to run duals. Currently we do not run any duals.

Looking for input and opinions on R&C's as we have never ran them but quite a few around here do.

When working with my uncle on his sugar cane farm he only used Rice & Cane tires. They are always loaded and pull great. We used them on the road to haul to the mill for years and were not bad for wear. Very rarely got stuck but when we did it was a pain to get out. In the late 90's we switched to radials and they lasted even longer. We used 20.8 and 18.4 X 38 on most tractors.

...Used them for years in the fall. Had them mounted on separate rims. Go like all heck,BUT.....when you get stuck you learn the definition of stuck. One half turn not going forward and you are dead!!!!!....QR..

Red,
I'd advise against them if you're planning on using tractor for tillage(plowing, digging, etc)especially in heavy soil.We had a set of Armstrongs on our 1800 Oliver diesel.Great traction,BUT a very short-lived tire. The problem is the longer paddles create extreme side-wall flex, causing side-walls to fail within a couple years.Standard-traction farm tires are your best bet.~brad

you know if your not in soft ground conditions most of the time you are probably wasting money on the Rice tires.... they do not wear nearly as well they are more open to damage and they do not get any more traction on solid surfaces.

If your in any mud with the Rice you will not want any duals as that WILL tear up your final drives -- a Rice tire thats to large will on its own.

It's real simple, if you want more traction go with R&C, if you want more comfort stick to the radials. I have had both in the rice field and there's no comparison as for as traction!
good luck

You can't beat Rice & Cane tires in wet and heavy soils. I have one tractor right now with R&C tires 20.8x38. The big thing I notice is that when you drive across a meadow when it's wet you won't tear the sod up like bias 23 degree tires. Besides the fact that you can walk right through wet holes that'll stop any radial or bias tread tire. They also work well in the deep snow, but are a bugger to get chains for.
