My dad has an older Thomas skid steer (Model 1006 S/N 50583)with a failing engine. We know it has a Wisconsin engine, but we can not find any identifiction/nameplate information on the engine. He bought it used decades ago and at the time we believed the engine was rebuilt. We searched the engine and could not find a nameplate. (We suspect it was removed or painted over at a previous overhaul.)

Could someone please either help me id this engine or point me to a better place to look.

The engine is running rough and probably needs a valvejob. Any information of what engine may interchange with this would also be helpful (as a used engine may be a more economical alternative to overhaul.)

Thank you.

I have the bobocat 600 with a vf4d wisconsin, they also use the vh4d, if it has a distributor have a look at the lobes on the dizzy shaft if they are odd shaped (not 90deg apart ) it is the ve4d or vf4d, if they are 90 deg apart it is the vh4d. the D on the end means distributor. also the manifold on the ve4d and vf4d mount to the cylinders parrallel to the the stroke and the vh4d, vg4d and vr4d manifold is mounted horizontally.

You have to be careful on the wisconsin v-4 engine rotation. The ones they put in the clark bobcat turn the opposite direction of a regular one so the bobcat dealer told me. I have a bobcat 610 that someone converted from electric motor to wisconsin.

check out the v/4's on the old bailers-- as I remember from working at a JD place in high school in the 50's there were many v/4's and most of them would interchange ??? if you find one close to size and drive end components
