I posted a question a few weeks ago on the tractor pulling web site but got no appropriate answers. I have a 435 john deere and a 430 case. Decided I would like to see my case smoke when i take it to the local pulls but how do i make it smoke. Would like to make it so the 430 case only smokes when the throttle is COMPLETELY open is this possible. Also got any tips how to make my John deere A smoke without fouling plugs?
Thanks

If you really want to see some smoke drill a hole in your exhaust pipe or muffler. Than put a copper tubeing in the hole and run the tubing back to the tractor seat. Next you will have to find a gallon jug with a pump on it. You know the ones that soap or cleaner come in. Fill the jug with oil or waste oil..... make up a system to hook the copper tubing to the end of the pump. When your tractor gets warmed up just pump the oil down the tube and I will promise you that it will smoke!!!! When I was young back in the day we used to do this with cars.... It will smoke who's ever behind you out. I hope this helps you make smoke.....have fun!!!

Had an unintentional smoke job when my turbo blew a seal. It made the most awful mess of oily soot all over the tractor, me, and the whole area. Better do it without smoke if you can. Ed

I remember as a kid working at a service station after school, the other kid working with me filled the better part of 50 gallons in a gas Ford semi tractor with diesel. We were busy, I had 4 out of 4 gas pumps going, and he filled the tractor at the same time. Hmm? Knowing we had 2 diesel, I asked him which pump he used and he pointed to a diesel. I helped him drain the tank, and we filled the guy up with gas, but must"ve still been enough diesel left in the tank, because when it drove off, layed down a James Bond quality smoke screen all the way down the road. Ha Ha Ha Ha.

Same kid (my buddy) filled a trailered Cat up too on a day we were out of diesel. Could"ve only been gas, so I helped him drain that one too.

Those were back in the days long before self serve existed. Probably why they came to be, now that I think about it.

I built an exhaust pipe and stack for my A several years ago as a promotion for my business, (custom exhaust systems) that I released LP into the top of the exhaust pipe just below the stack. This would send a 6 foot flare out the stack that looked pretty neat. Lost the digital pictures with the last hard drive crash. Dumb idea? probably, although I didn't release any of these. But it sold a lot of stacks!

I saw a 1/4 scale gas tractor that had diesel lines run to the exhaust stacks. When the pipes got hot, he would flip a switch and let some fuel out. This caused some smoke rings and lots of smoke come out while running. This seems very dangerous if not respected and is only listed for an idea. Be safe and just have fun!!!

If you just want to put on a show, research how the aerobatic teams make smoke...they have an oil injector on the exhaust manifold...they turn it off and on at will, by pulling a knob.

The tractors you see blowing black smoke at the pulls are diesels with the pumps turned up and sometimes modified to shoot lots!!! of fuel into the cylinders.Since a diesel can,t be flooded out like a gas engine, you want to shoot all the fuel into it as you can to make the most power. The smoke comes from the fuel thats not burned in the cylinders coming out the exhaust and burning in the hot exhaust system. Don't know why anyone would want a gas engine like a model A to smoke?

I can see why you didn't get any answers.Unless you have one of the rare JD A diesels,if it smokes it is sick. A fuel/air ratio that creates smoke is way too rich and will make no power and will soon foul plugs. The pullers don't smoke to look cool, they smoke because up to a limit a diesel makes more power the more fuel it gets so they alter the governor and the pressure in the inj. pump. The whole engine is modified to make use of all this extra fuel....Just kiddin' bout the JD A diesel...what you need to do is do some reading up on the basics of internal combustion gas and diesel engines and theory of operation. Diesels smoke when they are making power (usually)gas engines smoke when they are sick(or choke left on) Smoke means nothing if you end up in last place, which you will if all you want is smoke.
