I found an International S1800 truck (maybe mid 1980's) at an auction and need to know any info. that might be useful before attempting the purchase. It has nothing on the back of it. The truck was used primarly for a plow truck for a township. The driver side rocker panel is rusting out. The frame looks like it is fine but could use paint. How are these IH trucks? How hard would it be to add a dump body to it. I noticed it had a PTO knob inside the cab and levers that look like they are for a dump. Any oppinions appreciated. Thanks.

Lots of possibilities on engine here. If 6 cyl could be IH own DT466, Cummins L10, or even Detroit 6-71.If V-8 most likely IH 9 liter. Worked in school bus shop that ran about 50 with 9 liters spinning Alison slush trans in them. Only lost 1 eng while i was working there. Turned out to be a bad drum of oil, Shell Oil paid for the engine replacement.
If it was a township plow truck, it most likely had a dump box, so PTO, or even pump might still be there. Maybe even can add box using existing mounting holes in frame.
Tough trucks, but nothing luxurious. The S cab came out in about 75 or 76. Plow trucks usually have doubled frame rails.

If the truck has a DT-466 engine you will be OK but if it has the 9 liter V-8 good luck getting parts.

Now ya got me curious. Just got a '81 S series International with a diesel V8. Not sure if it is a 9 liter or not. Been trying to find out just exactly what it is. Waiting on the lineset ticket to arrive from Navastar. Did IH make any other size V8 diesel during that time? Are you saying that parts are totally unavailable? Engine is in good shape now, guess I better make sure it stays that way.

If I understand correctly there were two series of that V8. First was the DV550 which was 9.0 liters then the later somewhat better 9.0L. We currently have the DV550 which idles on 4 and runs on 8, well actually idles on 3 and runs on 7. Can't find a good replacement pump for decent money. Buddy has a 9.0L he wants to trade for my 550. He collects odd-ball IH stuff and has two other 550 and needs several more to get one good running one!

Were there any physical differenced in these engines? Is there any cast markings on the blocks to tell the difference. Any type of decals or painted markings are long gone off mine.
