Wondering if anyone has ever rebuilt(replaced )the syncronizers in a 5 speed manual transmission on a 1 ton dually. I have to baby it going into 3rd or it grinds. real bad when cold and transmission fluid is cold. I hear it can be a big job and expensive. Can't shift the other gears real fast either. Any comments welcome.

Something simple to check would be the oil in the transmission might be someone changed it and put in the wrong oil, most newer transmissions use a fairly low viscoscity oil if it has heavier gear oil in it may be causing the problems you are having

You are right for some Ford 2-wheel drives. Mine is an '90 F-250 and the 5 speed Manual Trans I am told is made by Mazda and a Tag on it warns to only use ATF for gear Lube.

Unless ya have the special tools from what i am told it is imposible as the scyro's have to be heated to be installed and ya have to have the holding fixture to disassamble and reassamble and at one time when i thought that i had a tranny problem with my 88 and barrowed the factory book from what i saw i realydid not want to get into it and started pricing trannys and found out that a rebuild was 1850 bucks my cost and i could get a NEW one form ford at my cost for 1375 HUMMMmmmm. When i found my problem it was not the trans but the noise was telagrahen from the rear end and it was a wiped ring and pinion because of a crush spacer that crushed more . So before ya jump in with a rebuild if ya got a buddy that works for Ford have him check his cost on NEW before rebuild. Just might supprise ya.

Thanks for the info. I had heard a little along the same as what you have said . I still get along pretty good ,just can't shift real fast and of course loose momentum when hauling anything.

the tranny for your '96 isn't quite as cheap as for tractor vet's '88. F6TZ-7003-MARM which is for a 2wd (you never said) and FTZZ-7003-PARM is for a 4wd. they both list for $3241.12, wholesale for $2673.94.

For that kind of money, I could learn to double clutch.
