They are having a Coyote hunting contest in my area here in New York.Ive never really hunted them before.Ive seen only 2 out back the 9yrs years Ive been here. For ten bucks I said what the heck, first prize is 2000.00 Anyone have any tips?Im not gonna go out and spend a whole lotta money on electronic calls and such and Id probably be wasting my time on mouth calls since I have never used one.Im sure them Coyotes would be laughin at me.Is there any baiting techniques? We can hunt them at night here Im pretty sure. How do you shoot em at night do you use a spotlight or do you need snow, moonlight, etc. Will have to check my hunting book on the exact rules.
Thanks Stan

here in southern ohio we use a very large live trap, we put tame rabbits in a small cadge behind the drops play a rabbit distress call ,take a break for a hour or so and come back.have gotten several , we also have used this cadge to catch wild turkeys, coons , stray dogs, only got one rabbit killed , sheled corn works great for wild turkeys

Here in NE, I hunt those things out of board’em. Don’t know what the rules of the event are but I would look at the weather events of the day and find the prevailing wind direction and get up wind with some fresh bait (ie dead rabbit or something). If you have time to scout the area prior to the event- find the scats and stay somewhat close to there. Calling- Go electronic if allowed with wounded rabbit (if baiting with rabbit). Light- Next issue. Get a visible night sight on your gun sights and get up high, like on top of a hay bale stack (don’t know what you have there). If you can hunt near a farmstead…sit in the barn and use the FAINT light from the yard as you stay in the dark. Sounds like a lot of fun. Also, if you can’t go electronic then buy a tape/mouth call combo and take the time to learn it. Start out with loud calls and get quiet as if the bait animal is dying. Make sure you know your shooting alley and you don’t have black on black sights.

Typically best to put your bait on top of the hill and sit below so the silloutte sticks out-easy kill assuming you can't sit up high. Aim for the head, that way they drop and you can stay put while others come up. Have fun. I think will go this weekend too. I just shoot a .22 or .223, something fast. the .22 for close range and the .223 for 1/4 mile to 1/2 mile shots.

Few years back I was having a problem with coyotes coming right into the yard and killing cats, chickens and the like. Told a friend he came over the next night to show me how it was done.

We went out in my pasture and and he drove a stake into the ground and tied his wife's toy poodle to it. We then back off about 50 yards to my flood light and waited. The little yipper dog started whining and then started "crying". Flipped the lights on and dropped three coyotes in a second or two. AR15 works great.

LOL! Finally a good use for a toy poodle. Don´t wait too long to turn on the lights or you may need new bait and your friend may need a new wife!

Have a Remington 700bdl in 222cal sighted in at 100yds.Guns about 30-40 yrs old looks like it came right out of the box.First varmint rifle I ever owned what a sweetheart.Been shootin higher cals,7mag,30-06.Dont think Ill be using any live bait, dont think I got the heart for it.Gonna be hard enough shootin a dog I think as I have only killed what I eat in the past.Everyone round here says they here them all the time, but I never do.Now I do have some hearing loss, but what I was wondering was if my dogs(bout 20 of em) here em first and all start howling together for no reason at all and then I cant hear the coyotes.Question about using the light at night? How do you go about using it,seems difficult to spotlight em and then try and shoot em.I assume you need a partner?
Thanks Stan

here in norhthern illinois, we"re just about overrun with them. knocking hell out of the fox population and not immune from taking the farmers dog when in packs in winter. 22-250 remington for longer ranges. 12ga. 3"mag w/00 buckshot for closer range. good luck on those "yotes.

The closest I came to a coyote was when I was out trail riding on my new Bultaco 40 years ago.
My friend and I had just crossed a set of RR tracks and rode down into a culvert where we stopped so I could check my bike.
Along came a Coyote walking on the RR tracks intently looking in the other direction. My friend clapped his hands when he was even with us, about 10 feet away. He figuratively jumped out of his skin and took off like a shot!

Not a big fan of killing anything I don't eat, and would never tie a live animal up, each to their own, but around here the coyote has gotten quite brazen, I took a buck during archery season, waited 1/2 hour to climb down, not push it further away, was a perfect heart shot at 20yds. the only distance I'll allow myself to shoot, well it went about 100 or more yards into a bog, with the humps everywhere, few creeks in it, mostly dry but with short growth elm, and all the rest, not easy tracking, damn coyotes beat me to it, no fooling around, I was shocked, we never had this problem before.

They travel a lot, I hear them at night all the time, we have more than a dozen, anything dead or the rabbit call will work usually, sometimes you get shut out. I use the .223 Mini-14 ranch rifle, but sometimes the.308 M1-A1, just like it better, little more wallop than is needed though. Make sure to be sighted in. We have too many coyotes now, the rabbits are abundant here, so they have been drawn in, but these are large coyotes, they pressure the deer often, I've been in the field and have had deer run right by me with their tongues hanging out, then spot the coyote who is foiled by my presence, same deer came by twice, seemed to be doing laps. Problem is you have to get them at night, I have an elevated stand, so they don't get wind of me, the best is when snow is on the ground and you have moonlight and it's not bitter cold, I get enough light in my scope to place a shot with snow and or some moon light. I'm all for keeping them in check, after they beat me to my kill last fall, that was the worst.

About 2 years ago I spotted one just laying down to rest about 8:00 a.m. November, found a nice sunny spot, an easy kill, but instead, I crept up on him, I eventually got so close I could have kicked him, when he finally spotted me, I never saw such a terrified animal, he took one look at me and his legs could not get under him fast enough, he ran like hell, I could hear him in the corn off in the distance. I never thought it possible to get that close to one.

SJ, Your about to have the Most Fun ever. I dont know what your gonna use for a Gun , But I suggest anything in the .223 Caliber. I have a Bushmaster AR-15 with a Leupold Vari-X II , 3x9 Scope . Its sweet. Ruger Mini 14 Ranch Rifle also works well.Take some time and sight your Rifle in for 100 Yards. Two things you need to Know for accurate shooting , Windage and Elevation ! Find yourself whats called a ,"Dying Rabbit", call. Sounds like a Rabbit stuck and dying , and that will bring Coyotes from far away. For Lighting , a Good deep cycle battery and what we call a Q beam will work well. If you have any source for Animal Carcasses ( we shoot squirrells and store them ) scatter them around your hunting area, and get them used to having it be a food source for them .Its more a Hunt of setting up in One area and getting them to come to you. Your gonna have a Ball.....

when i lived in WI we would go to a pet store and buy a rabbit. tie it up by the hind legs to a small tree and sit about 25-30 yards away with a scatter gun. worked everytime. now in SD i mainly call. when i"m west river greyhounds do the trick.

Yea, that sounds like real fun. I am in no way connected to peta. I raised rabbits for food in my younger years, and would kill them quick. Had to stop eating them when the kids realized they wearn't eating chicken. Stan

some lady won a contest in Pennsylvania using a cat in a cage. He is in a calling contest so you have to call them in only I would guess. Our contest is limited only to calling. And I am not sure if any states allow you to use live animals as decoys, not that that usually matters.

We are also having a coyote hunting contest this weekend in Michigan. The hunting store that is sponsoring the contest sometimes has coyote calling champ come in from out west and tell us how it is done, all I can say is that what those guys do out west were they watch a coyote come in for 10 minutes from 500 yards does not work out east. None of those guys were ever able to get a coyote during our hunt. States like Michigan, Penn, and New York and the other eastern states offer the toughest hunts.Try to sneek into a area and spend up to 20 minutes calling. Do not treat it like it is deer hunting, you need to have a specific area you are going to call them out of, not like deer hunting were you plop down in the middle of the woods. They can also be anywhere any time.

Where"s the Michigan contest? On TV there were some guys in Wyo. I think shooting them at 750 yds. Not many spots here in Mich. you could shoot that far. Coyotes wake me up at night howling. Been thinking about trying it myself. Got a 220 swift that"s heck on woodchucks and take it to Wyo. for prarie dogs. Shells are expensive. What do you guys think of the .17 cal.?

Gus,

the contest is a statewide hunt, but is sponsored by Nettie Bay Resort up in Hawks, that is in Presque Isle County up by the bridge, give them a call if you want to enter, you go in teams of up to 3. Really nasty weather this weekend so that should be interesting. Not sure how many guys are gonna get into the woods with the snow so deep in parts.

Buy you a simple mouth call for a couple of bucks and learn to use it. Don't overdo it. several squalls and wait a few minutes then again if no results. There is nothing like the thrill of seeing a coyote coming to you at full speed from a half mile away.
