I've always liked the look of the older burly tractors. I'm going to try to restore one, but I also want to use it as well, and I need something with some beef. Anybody have opinions on either the MF1150 or IH 1456? I've never been a big Massey fan, but my dad had a 150 and it was a great little workhorse. Don't know about the V-8..

Growler: I may be a bit prejudice, having used Farmalls all my life. However I did a lot of trucking for a Massey dealer. I believe the MF 35-135 was probably the best tractor ever built in that class and type of tractor, but that is about as far as it goes for me. I trucked more of those larger Massey's back from farms to the dealer for some of the most rediculous little items. We used to have a saying, V8 Massey's were a bit like dogs that liked riding on the back of a truck. You pull up along side one and they would jump on.

Just my observation over the years. I thought those tractors were hauled back to the dealer a lot of trips.

An 1150 has more "beef" than the Farmall. As far as looking good, nothing has more eye appeal than the Perkins V8, second only to a 426 Hemi. As far as fuel consumption goes, it's a non issue with my 1150. Also, Barnrat know's what he's talking about.

Thanks for the comments. I suppose the same "V-8 gulping the fuel" statement goes for the IH 1468? (I realize I didn"t mention it to begin with)
Thanks gents.

The 1456 will use just as much fuel as an 1150. 1150's certainly wern't as frugal as the 1100 or 1130 for the amount of HP you get out of them. Some say 1150's are hard to get engine parts for, From personal experience I find that hard to believe. An 1150 will out work a 1456 any day of the week and you'll have less tranmission problems. 1150's are easier to service(no spilling hydraulic oil all over the operators platform). You also don't have to climb all over the tractor to fuel the 1150's saddle fuel tanks. Things like tilt/telescoping steering wheel and hydraulic seat are nice features. The 1150 also has greater hydraulic capacity, up to 22gpm. All the 1000 series Massey's had a hydraulic unloading valve, which made them super easy to start in the cold.

The massey will bankrupt you on fuel alone those V8's really gulp it down .

I would think parts would be much more readily available for the 1456. Plus that 56 series just might be the most comfortable & pleasant to operate tractor of all time.

We have a 1256 that we have run hard for the last 8 or so years. Loader work and heavy field work for the first 3 years, then loader and baler for the next 2 and finally just the loader for the last 3 years. A couple of clutches and the TA finally gave up a couple years ago. All in all pretty bullet proof compared to the neighbor's loader tractors.

I would go with the 1456, a classic that is sure to increase in value over the years and a true workhorse!
