I just bought a rear tiller for Ford 2600 tractor. I was thinking about posting an ad in the paper this spring about tilling garden services (thinking this will help pay for the tiller). How would I come up with rates on tilling gardens so I don't go in the hole on this venture? Or this a foolish idea? Thanks for any input.

I use a troybilt and I have a 25.00 minimum and that is for a 10x10 garden new ground is more .some guys around here charge .25 cents per square foot , and I started charging what the rental stores charge to rent them also this is how I price it now on a good day you could make 3-400.00 if you work hard .and you also need to find a moldboard plow this will help out in heavy sod turn it over let it set a few days then hit it with tiller a lot less wear and tear

I run a Howard 5' tiller on a 50 HP tractor and charge $45 an hour, $40 minimum. I do it for the enjoyment of operating machinery....make a lot of friends and get a lot of referalls. I run older equipment and take care of it.....I'm slowly running those expensive guys out of business. I give neighborhood discounts to decrease load/unload time.

Hi T,

Unless you've got some immense gardens around there, travel time's pretty much everything. Even for my compact tractor I figure minimum charge. Used to travel for 4 hrs billing, but quit that last year. Now it's 8 hrs minimum (7 on the ground). No chance I'd ever get any garden work, but landscape is where I get my calls for the small tractor. Real busy in the spring.

You need to figure how long you'll likely spend tilling a spot, how long it takes to get there and back, and how much you want for your time, tractor, and truck. That's assuming you aren't going the professional route of including insurance and looking seriously at your overhead.

Not anything I'd put hrs on my tractor over.

A suggestion if you try it: either work for full fare or free. Discounting your rate almost never works.

I doubt it's relevant unless you live near here, and even then not very. But to answer your question, $45-85/hr, depending on the tractor. $45 buys the smallest one.

Which is certainly not a recommendation for you. My financial situation is likely different from yours. I turn down more work every year than I accept. Must not be over-charging. I get very good referrals.

The real question is how much do you want/need the work?

What we do share in common is that I only buy machinery for my use, then see if anybody wants to pay for it. I also have a reputation of being a good operator. Being polite, I don't argue the point. There are undoubtedly better, but I sell the job.
