I have a 1937 farmall F-20 that I can't make run! It acts like it is not getting fuel. If you choke it to the point of fuel pouring out of the carb. it will fire, but not run. If you pour fuel directly in the cylindars it will run until it burns it up, then dies. I have dismantled the carb. many times and cant find anything wrong. I also had the mag. rebuilt. The engine was rebuilt about three years ago, and has been sitting ever since. I'm looking for any sugestions.

Check your priming cups on top of rocker cover if they are open, no start

Why would the primer caps on the rocker cover prevent it from starting? As of right now the rocker cover isn't even installed. What does the rocker cover have to do with the engine running?

Look at top of rocker cover.4 holes,2 for hold down and 2 for primer pipes to go thru into cyl.head.If these holes in head are open,no manifold vacuum. If closed, disregard replys. GeezerMN

It sounds like you have and intake manifold leak somewhere. That could be why you have to have the mixture super rich to get any fuel up to the cylinders. try pull starting and while she is rolling over, spray ether around the manifold gaskets and carburator gaskets and see if she fires. that should tell you if you have a leak

Chuck,
Is the mag impulse making a good strong snap as you roll it over? If it isn"t then I would suspect mag problems. Also, did you file the points? Those old up draft carbs can be a real bear to get fully primed. On my 20 I usually have to pull it to start it when i try it for the first time after winter. It sometimes takes a fair amout of pulling too. Gas can be leaking out and I will still have to do this. Sometimes its just the nature of the beast. The Nebraskacowman is very knowlegable about thos F20"s and he ca help ya out lots.

Good Luck

The carb float may be set wrong not allowing gas to flow into the carb. Or, when the Carb was put back on the throttle finger wasn't lined up with the notch in the butterfly control. It is easy to miss it.

Chuck,Pull the spark plugs and put your finger against the hole and turn it over,if it blows your finger away from the hole check the intake gasket,if it didn`t then most likley stuck valves.

Is fuel pump bad? I bought an F12 and couldn't get it started--talked to an old timer and he told me to get the hottest plug possible and be sure the points are set correct and he told me to clean them with fine sandpaper and it started and ran like a top.Sounds like your fuel pump could be the problem.

What are, and where are the primer tubes? What exactly do they do?
