Howdy, all.
I"m putting the head back on my Ferguson TO-30 and was surprised that the manual calls for "a commercial sealant or cup grease." I"ve never had to use anything on a headgasket before, so I"m curious: does it make a difference? Anyone out there tried anything different like light engine oil, spray-on sealants, etc.?

Thanks,
Darren

Indian Head sealant Re: Sealant for headgasket?!? in reply to Darren in TN, 04-04-2006 20:34:04
Use Indian head this stuff has been around since the 20s and is great to hold the gasket in place during instalation, ANY grease will work on the other side, this allows the head to slip and alin as needed when torqueing. The Indian Head is a thick shelac and may be easly cleaned or desolved by alcohol.

The IH_Case dealer in Seaford ,Delaware recommends cup grease on head gaskets.

Copper caot is the way to go. Make sure before you put the gasket on you have a good clean block and head. Then coat it good with copper coat, make sure you have a good even coat and it looks like copper before putting on the gasket then coat the gasket again. Then drop the head on, be sure to retorque the head after you have it good and hot. Retorque it when its still hot and rest the valves also, if its and over head valve engine

Never tried cup grease on a head gasket either.. Depends on what material the gasket is made from but I use several heavy coats of aluminum paint and install while paint is still wet or copper coat as mentioned. Permatex aviation sealer and Hi-Tack works well also and comes in a can with a brush on lid.

I use the old Copper Coat. I'm a big fan and would recommend. Never tried cup grease.
