Had the transfer pump on the Cummins go out this summer and at first I thought it might be the injector pump. Dealer said it would be $1,800 for a rebuild. I imagine I might find a cheaper place to do it but it still would cost quite a bit. Got me to thinking, how hard is it to rebuild an injector pump and the injectors yourself? Have any of you guys done this? It does'nt need it right now but the day is coming...

Injection pump and injector work is definitely not a shade tree/home garage type operation, altho I know this son of a pup that got away with rebuilding a Simms Fordson Super Major injection pump in his dirt floored garage but then he likes living on the edge anyway.

My buddys did the same thing and a couple mounths later the injection pump went so we got hom a rebuild for 950 , it would be in your best intrest to put a fuel gauge or warning lite to aleart you to fuel pressure lose on the newer 5.9 cummins with the 24 valve engine and as far as DIY unless ya got the 125000 grad layen around for the test stand and other stuff and a couple years on that stand plus the schoolen ain't no way you are going to do it under the shade tree.

I would send the pump out and have it done right. A good part of the work with pumps is the setup anyway, and you aren't doing that in your home shop. There are specialists for a reason. Injectors are the same game. However, there are more injector testers around for setting them up... But accuracy in the setup is important. It's often cheaper and easier to just send the stuff out, and have the work done by somebody who stands behind their work. For what it's worth....
