I was reading awhile back on how you said to hook up the one post alternator and I tried it on my diesel tractor and it didn't work or I don't think it did,the alternator got hot and when I hooked the wire from the #2 post to the battery post on the alternator it was clicking on the inside and the wire from the #1 post I ran to the switch to the post that is on only when the key is on and hooked a light bulb in line and the light would stay on when the tractor was running. What have I done wrong or is this one of those so called self exciting alternators. Thanks

If that alternator has been converted to a one-wire hookup by installation a self-exciting regulator, the top plug connector is supposed to be blocked off with a plug. Doesn't mean it was, but it's supposed to be, to avoid confusion. Sometimes, without being converted, the 10SI alternators can self-excite anyway, but in most cases, they won't until they spin faster than 2000 RPM - which probably won't happen on a tractor.

What method do you use to excite your alternator?

Look at their tech info on 1 and 3 wire type.

As Bob says it should have worked that way but who knows you may have a bad alternator. I have seen a good number of them now days that right out of the box they don't work. I don't even leave the parts tore with out have them checked and most of the time 1 out of 5 will be bad

If you are talking about a common Delco 10SI 12-Volt negative ground alternator, and you have the battery connected correctly, negative ground, it should have worked.

Here's a photo of the harness I use, showing a diode. An "idiot light" works the same way, in place of the diode.
