Had a local farmer who had a mostly flat farm (Land)! He always carried a chain or two hanging from the rear axle on his tractor, with the hooks dangling loose! worked great--never had a problem! He sold the farm to developers, and moved back into the hilly part of our township. And used the same tractor, with the chains hanging loose! Well, those loose hooks came to bite him one day. He was mowing a steep hillside with the sickle bar, on the tractor, when one of those hooks swung sideways, caught a wheel spoke----- ---and that was all she wrote! The chain wound up, and the tractor came up and over backwards, and he was found staring at the sky, with the steering wheel in his chest, and no more need to worry about farming, his family, or anything! DEAD as a door-nail!

Thanks for the input. Since I want to carry the chain on a John Deere MT, Ford 3600, John Deere 2010, and a Kubota L245 I may use more than one solution.

I made chain boxes, went to the local scrap yard and found a few feet of 5 inch square tubing, cut it to length, welded bottoms in with clearance for water to drain. Bolt or weld someplace on the tractor.

Oh I don't know it's kinda like me, old with some rust but it's a worker and thanks. BTW it's a 3000 and I was in the middle of rebuilding the loader hydraulics when the picture was shot.

We have a couple of hooks bolted to the frame on our 1086, wrap the chain around them and forget it.

Wrap around the 3-point arms works fine too, if you aren't using it or the PTO.

Works for me. in reply to Vacherie, 03-27-2006 19:43:47
I use a couple clevises off old horse drawn wagon tongues and bolt them on the engine side rail. They make great hooks for carrying a chain.Old disk clevises would work just as well.

If we have it on our loader, we hook it on the frame where the oil fill is supposed to be if we used the built in reservoir. On the others we wrap it around the front weights or from the weight bracket, depends on the configuration (mainly brand of tractor).
We've never lost one yet

We always wrap it tight around the base of the 3 point arms. You do have to move it if you want to hook anything to the PTO though.

If you just pile a chain on somewhere, they will always jiggle off. Put them in a rockbox, wrap them around something, or hook the hooks over something. Then they will be there when you need them.

What is a rockbox? We don't even have rocks where we live.

Count your blessings. If you pick all the rocks off a stoney ridge here you are left with a slough.
