personal preference would be dual hydraulics , if someday you want to hang loader on it , wide front , power shift good if you plan to use tractor for pto work . get a fiend to go with you when you find one that sounds good to you

Yeah but What is the BEST way to evaluate like the engine just by listening or observing the smoke it pruduces....OR how would I evaluate the tranny or the clutch?

You need to take along someone who is very familiar with running,or better yet repairing the 4020 tractor. That person will know where to look for the many possible problems.

You are SO right....I need to find a good Mecanic to go with me..... .

In general if the tractor is good..... lets say EVERYTHING checks out good. Does this mean there should be little chance of catostrophic failure? Has any one seen a 404 engine with a thrown rod?

If everything checks out,you have every chance of several thousand more trouble free hours.
Many of the 404 engines went well over 10,000 hrs before needing an overhaul. The bottom end of the 404 is pretty rugged,so not much rod problems.I have been told, never reuse the rod bolts if you remove the rod caps, always replace with new bolts.

They were all pretty good old tractors, but IMHO the 69-72 with 12V electrics, side console hydraulics and improved pto mechanisim, along with many other small improvements, are the best 4020's.
