Got a cylinder head apart and want to clean the parts before I take them to the machine shop. The valve faces are covered in hard carbon, soaked in carb cleaner for 24 hrs, which helped, but they are not perfect. Would it damage the valves to clean them with the wire wheel on my bench grinder, so long as I don't wire wheel the stems?

Why do you want to clean them? The machine shop is going to clean them anyway. Unless they charge extra for dirty parts I'd say take them in as they are let them handle it. They probably have some kind of hot acid dip tank to take care of things like that. Why do the work when they'll probably do it for free? Unless you like doing it, which I can understand, let them handle it.

Cleaning up valves on a wire brush was always one of my jobs when I got home from school and went out to the shop to help my Dad.
Just remember to keep them in order from front to back.

I place them standing up(or most I can fit) in a pot of water with some dish detergent and boil the water. Believe it or not but it breaks up the carbon so you can wipe it off easily. Been doing it this way 30 years now. I tried the wire wheel method many times. Too much work and dust.Try it, it can hurt.

Yeah, HB has a great point. If you have ever pulled apart a head that has been leaking coolant into the combustion chamber, you will have seen that it is sparkling clean, including the valves. Steam cleaned I guess...
