I have a 51 Farmall H and it seems to take forever for the temp. gage to show a reading. and it never really seems to warm up all the way. I was thinking the thermostat is bad and needs replaced right?

Does it have a KAT coolant heater on it or one of a simaler type? If it does and it is plumbed into the head were the sending unit is for the temp. gage is it will sometimes give a cold reading. Have had this happen on several tractors.

Not necessarily. Don"t know about Farmalls, but some engines of that era had the temperature measurement point fitted at the back of the block. If this is the case, then it may be part filled/covered with deposits over the years.
You can check the water flow through the radiator to determine if the thermostat is stuck open. You can cover the radiator core temporarily to see how the warm-up alters. You can check the actual temperature of the coolant to see if the engine is hot but the indication is wrong.
Not saying you are wrong, but there are several things you can do to check it yourself before jumping to a premature conclusion and possibly changing out a part which is serviceable.

Are sure sure it even has one in it. A lot of times they are removed and threwn away because at some point in time they got hot and the owner didn't want to take the time or spend the money to replace it. But yes that would be why it didn't warm up much. I would say at least 50% of the tractors I buy don't have thermostats in them
