Alice Chalmers WD/WD45 stickshift questions

This message may come up twice, I forgot to put a subject and it didn't show up the first time.

I am looking to buy a WD45. However, I was told that the inferior WD model's emblems are often switched to WD45 emblems to increase their sale value. I was told that the distinguishing feature is the stick shift, that on one of the two the shifter is crooked, and that is how one determines if it is a real WD45. So my questions are:

Is it true that the one of them has a crooked shifter, and if so, which?
Should WD45s command higher prices?
Are WD45s considered better tractors?

Thank you for any help. I'm hoping there's no such thing as a stupid question(s)

Actually all WD-45's had the curved shifter. Although the late WD's had a curved shifter as well. I have also always heard that people switch the emblems because WD 45's are worth more. Some people put the wd 45's engine in the WD because the WD 45 had more horsepower. It is kind of hard to tell.

As John says and also the WD-45 engine doesn't have a plate on the right side of the engine and a WD engine does. By looking at them unless you know the serial numbers or what to really look for most people can not tell which is which.

WD's are not inferior to WD45's. They are lower horsepower and have a few other differences but are basically the same tractor.

The curved shifter with it's constant mesh transmission came in 1952 at serial number 127008. Some people prefer the WD transmission.

The WD45 production began with serial number 146607 and is marked by the itroduction of the 226 cu in engine rated at 43.21 belt horsepower vs. the WD at 34.63 belt horsepower.

The 201 cu in WD engine can be brought up to WD45 specs by changing the crankshaft stroke to 4.5 inches.

In most circles the WD45 will bring a few hundred more dollars than a WD, but not always. Condition is everything, and a good strong WD is every bit the tractor that a WD45 is.
