curious exhaust ?

I was just wondering, does putting a larger exhaust on a truck really do as much good as the manufactures say? My diesel has 3 1/2" factory exhaust, was thinking of bumping it up to a 4" mandrel bent exhaust. I know getting the air out is only half the program, but I won"t put an air intake on for a while. I"m not looking to make tons of power or be the loudest truck in town.

I have read some articles in Diesel Power magazine concerning this. They said going to a 4" exhaust will give you some increase on performance, a 5" will need some major mods to make any differance. As for an intake, I put a K&N air box on my PS, did not notice a lot of performance, but fuel economy dropped 2-3 MPG, as soon as it gets warmer I am going to put the stock air filter back on it. Just make sure the exhaust you put on has a muffler for a diesel, some companies are using gas mufflers on diesel engines and can cause BIG headaches. I think you can get a cat back system from Summit racing for about $300.00.

Thanks everyone for repliying. I have a F250 w/ the 7.3L Powerstroke. I have a subscription to Diesel Power, absolutely love the magazine. I was thinking of getting the K&N air intake on my truck. Not sure why your milage dropped, maybe your burning more fuel now that more air is being pumped in? Stopped and talked to a shop about getting the 4" exhaust, said I"d have to stay with the 3 1/2" down pipe due to space constrictions and keep some back pressure for the turbo, but 4" behind that. Said I was looking around $600 for all, including labor. I"ve heard problems come up when they don"t use mufflers designed for diesel engines. I"m gonna look around on prices, I think I could probably tackle this project and not mess up too much.

If a better engine is made by a larger intake and exhaust pipe then the manufacturer would have done it in the first place.
There is a great risk that things will be worse then when stock. Things are done to sync with other parts. Change one and could disturb the whole system.
Now I know that in all the Hot Rot mags that are out there they claim 10,20 30% increase in power if putting on special parts.
I believe that more top end power can be had but at what cost. Top end power usually trades off low end torque, what diesels are made to do.
Just my opinion.
By the way, what engine and year is it?
Good luck

If'n I remember right, you've got a Powerstroke. The first and very most important thing is to ditch the turbo downpipe. You can buy a pretty good turbo back 4" system on eBay for a shade over $300 with shipping. Do some poking around the web and you'll see the difference between the stock one and a mandrel bent one. Bit like the difference between a roadkilled snake and one of them Amazon man eating pythons. Best place for air is www.tymar.com

Just my opinion, but if you already have a 3 1/2 inch exhaust, I don't think going to a 4 inch will make any difference unless you make some other modifications.
