Guys,

This is why ya don't park tractors inside. They have a nasty habit of "one takes all".

"Get as far from production and retail agriculture as you can get!"

I like your advice for only one self serving reason. It means that there are that many fewer people for me to compete against when trying to rent land!

I was thinking that $1000 should be tops, since it is a small tractor w/ bad tires.

According to the post on the RPM forum this fire was caused by the block heater.

The same can be said for cars, electric, woodstoves and candles. There are ways to prevent fires in tractors, the easiest is to put a battery disconnect switch on it. I would much rather keep the tractor out of the weather and away from thieves, just takes some common sense.

A master disconnecton the batterys is a wise idea , one never knows when his tractor may become a Zippo

Yep,

They seem to have a mind of their own and you just never know when they are gonna decide to go "hot".

Sickening feeling, I'll tell ya. :>(

Around here there have been several barns go to the ground from John Deers 10 and 20 seires tractors with that stupid 24 volt system one up the road from the old shop almost went if the guys wife had not heard the tractor running and asked her husband why the tractor was running he went up and opened the barn doors and his 4020 was running with fire comming out from under the dash and sparks fallen in the loose hay and straw on the barn floor he got on it and drove it out side and with the help of the hired hand and his wife got the tracor out and the small fire that started on the floor

Well,

IH had their difficulties too.

That darned voltage buss in behind the lower left dash panel had a nasty habit of rusting away and leaving sparks for the "spilled" diesel fuel residue from refueling.

An unlit torch just waiting to happen.

Yepper,

Had one torch off one time; happened at 10 in the morning and luckily got it out of the shed before it took the whole works down. Still took me a week to rebuild the damage to the tractor.

That's when I started takin' the advice of my elders. :>)

I'm way too young to know anything about it but my neighbour who passed away said he remembered the days of gas tractors and them always catching on fire. The neighbours had some in the days he still ran horses and burned a couple before he got a tractor.

I'm not too keen storing a tractor in my shop but in a equipment shed that is open and just metal roof I'm fine with that. This from a guy who will use cutting torches in his wooden floored shed.
