We have been loaned a Yanmar YM 2700 for the past 3 years, but now the owner of it is downsizing and is going to sell it. He offered it to us for $3,500 and it has a front loader and it also has a rototiller. All of it works fine, even though (I'm embarrassed to admit!) we have done very little to maintain it in the 3 years we've had it.

Anyway, I've been comparing notes in the area (MI) and it seems a good deal. We've used it for 3 years with no problems. However, when they had to change the oil filter, they couldn't get a part so they had to rig it up a different way. I'm concerned about getting parts for it since it's gray market. There is actually a Yanmar dealer within 1/2 an hour of us, but I guess he gave the tractor owner a hassle before and wouldn't sell him parts.

So, what to do? The tractor's owner has ordered what he needed online, but I'm concerned that if something big/heavy went out, the shipping would be ridiculous. However, this tractor has worked well in the 3 years we've had it and has been a good workhorse. It seems to be reasonably priced (the guy is selling it to us even at a little bit of a loss). I like that's it's already here and we know how it works.

I bought a Kubota grey market L2202 Tractor (2WD) at an auction for $1500. I needed an oil filler cap for the transmission, so I went over to a neighbor who has several Kubota (non Grey market) tractors. Looked for and found the cap on a similar vintage tractor, went to the dealer(with who I and several neiGhbors hAve had problems wiTh bEfore)and told him the cap WAs for the L225, got it no problem. Then I told him it was for a greY market. Man was he ticked off. It was good to see the shoe on the other foot. I'd give the name of the dealer, but for now, you'll have to read between the lines, so to speak. The tractor runs good, and many parts interchange with legal Kubotas.

10 years ago I'd have told you to send it down the road. Now - punch Grey market, Yanmar into google and you'll have all the help and cross refeance parts at your finger tips. I'd no more fear buying a "newer" Yanmar or Kubota grey market then I'd fear buying a 1940s or 1950s American made tractor.

I have a grey market Yanmar 1300 that is the same as the US Yanmar sold 155 great little machine.Anything for it is a click away on the net. Also I'd say after borrowing it for 3 years you almost have to buy it to be fair about the situation.

Thanks all! in reply to Traditional Farmer, 06-04-2007 03:10:03
I think I am leaning toward buying it. There aren't a huge amount of tractors for sale around here in our price range, and we also face the problem of not being able to pick one up since we don't have a flatbed trailer or a truck, for that matter! (We do have access to a stick shift old Ford 250, but I really don't trust the clutch on that one, among other things!).

Anyway, we have used it but not abused it for 3 years. Now that I think of it, I believe that the owner has come out to check fluids and change the oil (as well as replacing the filter). We have a small hobby farm and the tractor has served up well for 3x a year brush hogging on 4 acres, rototilling, and moving dirt.

As far as the situation goes with us using it for 3 years with no compensation to the owner, it actually has been a win-win situation for both of us. The owner was more than happy to "store" it at our place, instead of incurring the wrath of his wife, who isn't too horribly excited about him having tons of equipment at their more suburban home ;-) He also stores his work truck and utility trailer here, so he's saving a lot on paying a storage place to keep the stuff or having a wife who's unhappy with his plethora of toys, erm, work equipment.

I appreciate everyone's help! You are a very knowledgeable group of folks!

If you _need_ a tractor, NO.

If a tractor would be cool to have, but you can get by if it sits waiting for parts for 3 months, sure.

I would buy a grey market from Japan long, long before buying a China tractor.....

I own a Yanmar 1500 grey market and have used it for 8 years. I've also owned a Farmall Cub and and 8N Ford.

Yanmar dealers are prohibited by the company to sell parts for grey market Yanmars. That doesn't mean you can't get parts. While the JD made by Yanmar are close they are not exact and you'll probably not have much success in getting parts there. However, there are plenty of Grey Market parts suppliers and they have almost anything you need. Example, my clutch bit the dust last year. I got everything I needed within 4 days from Hoye Tractor in Texas. I also done business with an outfit in S. Carolina.

I took the tractor to an independent tractor repair shop. The owners were former JD men and had no problems splitting the tractor and installing the new parts. They did a really good job at a fair price.

I'm not saying you should buy this tractor but I am saying that parts are available. There are forums for Yanmars and there is information on aftermarket filters and such.

Evaluate the tractor and how hard you have used it. Anything appear to be heading for failure? Gray market tractors get a real bad rap from dealers, why? somebody did an end run around them. The most frequent claim against them is they don't meet US safety standards. I've looked at a few that had all the same safety features as their "legit" counterparts. So it's your decision if you can get $3,500 worth the work out of it. If you can't, send it, if you can, keep it (AND maintain it). You've had it 3 years so you know whether you'll take it in the seat of the pants or not.

You MIGHT get parts for it at John Deere... John deere had the 650/750/850/950/1050/670/770/870/970/1070/790/990 built by Yanmar.

John Deere owns Yanmar. All the smaller JD's are in fact Yanmars. Good engines. They compete with Kubota which are good as well. Dave

John Deere DOES NOT own Yanmar. JD could not afford to own Yanmar. Would more likely be the other way... Gene

Price a "legal" one. Then decide what kind of condition it is in and how long it will run without needing any thing hard to get. Easy to say "leave it alone" but for 3500 with loader and roto tiller, myself, if I knew and liked it, I would buy it. 5 foot roto tillers for 3 point here bring around 800 dollars used.

Yesterday I tried to buy a 1982 Allis 5020 with loader. Very nice, great shape. Brought $7000 even. Every one gathered round to watch it sell. Little JD ( I think 830) with loader, again great, condition, brought $9000.

Please take my advice and send it down the road.
You will never be able to get parts for it. It
wouldn't be a bargain if they gave it to you. I
work at a Kubota dealership, and the reason the
dealers of legitimate tractors won't sell parts
for gray markets is that these tractors were never supposed to be in the U.S. The proper tarriffs were not paid on them and technically,
they don't exist. If a dealer sells a part for a gray market, he can lose his dealership, and be open to lawsuits if someone is injured in an accident relating to the part in question.

Better the devil you know than the devil you don"t. You know the machine, it"s capabilities, etc. Your call. You can research the differences before buying. Final question is: Have you worn it out?

Nope, we use it sparingly... in reply to RAB, 06-03-2007 13:40:52
We have put maybe about 25 hours on it since it came here. We"ve used it to move dirt around and brush hog the back field. It has been very handy!
