What year did the flathead continental flathead 6 cyl gasser appear? I need a history lesson please!! Any info from uses in autos, trucks, tractors, power units, anything!! Photos would be great!! Thanks in advance! ANY info is helpful! ChadS

Was looking in my Neb.state tractor test book under Graham Bradley the engine they tested was a con. with 31/4 x43/8 bore and stroke which is about 218 cid.Any how in a clevite book under con. f199 and f218 head gaskett no. 986-S or full set FS986-GK.Might be something that will help maybe. Could be totaly off base on the numbers of the engine.

Check out the Graham-Paige owners web site. There is a lot of info there.
Click on the "Who can I talk to...?" link to find an expert. They will help you out. The man you is the expert on the 1932-35 years I have known for several years and is very knowledgable as are the others.

About 1928 REO Mates and Durants used Continental sixes. Used in numerous trucks and fire engines, industrial and agricultural equipment. Used in REO's and Grahams and Hupps in late 30s. Graham became Frazer which was part of Kaiser Frazer which bought Willys and used the Continental engine until about 1965. Then it used AMC engines until about last year. They'll never stop making parts for old Jeeps, so look for a headgasket there.

I guess nobody mentioned Massey Harris. They used Continental engines and the AGCO dealers would have gasket sets for them.

I think the Graham Bradley farm tractor sold by Sears around 1939 had a 6 cyl. Continental .

Well in 1954 and 1955 Kaiser needed more power to keep up with the V8s others were using so they supercharged instead of spending money they did not have to develope a V8. As far as having 199 cu. in. I don"t know, the N/A had the 226 cu.in. I can"t think of any other car mfg. supercharging the Continental 6. Kaiser, Frazer might be able to help you.
Wait, In 1937-41 Graham had a supercharged 6 with 199 cu in. Super charger was a 2 flat amuminum plates bolted together and shaft driven. Maybe that is what you got. What did the Cord use for an engine? Can"t remember. Good luck!

I remember a story in a car magazine about Kaizer Frazer history. KF used continental engines and in the start of the 50's horse power race they supercharged the 6 cyl flathead engines in the last year or two of KF production.

Man, this's weird! I'd've bet a months pension there were tons of books on Continental Motors, but a quick check only turned up a mystery.
Wickipedia sez co started in 1904 with a 4 (no info on 1st 6)...my piston(1924) catalog shows 6's from 1914, but probably isn't complete(no id re L/Ohd).
MYSTERY: Alibris ? has book:" The Handy Governor For Gen Mtrs Trks With Cont Engines" but I thought GMC always used own...never heard of Continental-engined GMC...(but I'm not truck expert)

engine is in a 1939 Ghram Bradley. Has a factory supercharged 199ci flathead 6. Are the 226's the basic same block and head? Trying to hunt down a stock headgasket, without making one from copper. CHadS

Lubbock gaskets out of TX. can make a composite type or solid copper ones for you. Just send them the old one or a pattern. You can find them on google.

Interesting question for sure. I don't have any exact answers though. I have seen those in everything from Kaiser Fraser cars to a Worthington Blue Brute 105 air compressor my uncle has from 1945 I think was on the air tank tag. Lots of construction machinery even an Oliver combine. Very good engines for sure ! Anyone who knows the whereabouts of one of those air compressors I have some extra used parts to sell cheap.I got about almost the whole compressor unit for one.

Kaiser/Fraiser 226 cu in with bifugated (sp?) ports. All most same as used in a thousand hay choppers and such. I think a little some thing diferent on crank shaft. I remember the gasket set interchanging. M&M SP combine..some had mag, later had distributor on top.

I think Checker Cab had Continental engines. Also Worthington golf course tractors had them. Of course, there were other applications, like stationary engine applications, on generators, etc.
