Well, I bought one. I had never heard of the caliber untill yesterday and I was able to get it at a good price. A 77 Ruger mark II with the 26" barrel with a tasco 6x24 scope, a box of shells, and a gun case from a dealer who had it left over from christmas for under $600. Two things worry me; the good deal I got from the dealer and the availability of ammo. According to the literature, it is billed as the world's fastest cartridge that can be bought over the counter at around 4225fps. According to the computer, reloaders cant get the same performance as factory becuase the special powder used by hornady is not available at this time. It is the first new sporting gun I have bought is over 25 years. I went there to look for old winchester lever guns and old carpenter tools, which I collect, and talked to this guy who has himself around 30 old tractors and ended up buying this gun. I did buy one old winchester, mid-40s model.

I'll keep you all posted.

Thanks for all your replies-mike

Re: I have a wild idea just not sure how to set it in reply to Sloroll, 03-20-2006 11:49:34
The grease gun option is OK as long as the crankshaft is removed from the engine first, or you are certain there are no other pistons stuck. If it isn't and the piston is at top dead center you have a good chance of damaging something. Some grease guns can develop enough pressure to bend connecting rods, crack heads, twist cranks, etc, so you wanna be careful with the grease gun trick.

I have a ruger number 1 in 204 is a nice shooting gun about as fast as anything out there. Mostly use hornady varmint express vmax cartridges 40 gr with the plastic tip. If they hit anything they shatter and don't go very far not going to hit or kill something a mile and a half away. If i was buying again would get a 77 bolt action rather than the no 1 single shot

Kind of a solution in search of a problem. Pretty hard to improve on proven varmint cartridges like .22-250, .220 Swift, .223 Rem, .243 Win., 6mm Rem and .25-'06.

I think bullet selection is pretty limited in .20 cal. And your rifle will never meet its potential if you don't handload, so bullet selection is important.

Thought about getting my first centerfire rifle in that cal. Ammo isn't quite as available as say, .223 or .22-250. I'm going with 250 whenever the get the funds together.

I like it,I think if it come down to it,I'd probably buy a another .223 over the .204,but it was pretty impressive for it size.. nice little coyote rig..
