I have been biulding a log splitter and finally got it done or so I thought. I used a pump driven off of an 8hp kohler engine. The pump is chain driven. When I start to move my hyd lever it pulls the motor down really hard then kills it unless I let go of the lever. The cylinder moves real fast. Is there a way to slow down the hyd? Do I need a bigger sprocket on the engine or a restrictor in the hyd line somewhere? Thanks for any help.

The diameter of your hydraulic cylinder is to small mine are atleast 4". You should have the small
sprocket on the engine and the large on the pump.
The best move would be a larger dia. cyl. But a smaller sprocket on the pump might do it.
Mine has about a two inch on the drive sprocket
and a three inch on the pump. But I have a lot
more powerful engine.

for a log splitter what you really need is a two stage pump.

You seem to be running the pump around 2000 rpm now. If you would put a 10 tooth on the motor you would come down to about 1000 rpm which should help a lot.

Almost soundslike your running the pump fast and the engine slow sort of. Which on has the bigger srocket on it?? You need the small sprocket on the engine and the big sprocket on the pump. That engine wide open should run around 3000RPM give or take a liitle but the pump only needs to run around 1500 or less.

Well you did not tell me how fast you are running the engine nor what model of pump you have. I take it it stalls when the wedge hits the wood. What is the tooth count on the engine? on the pump? Also remember it takes 1 horse power for each one gallon of flow at a pressure of 1500 PSI. If it goes really fast your pump has a lot of flow. If nothing else tell me what the bore and stroke of your cylinder is and time how long it takes to fully extend the cylinder. Also what valve are you using? Your turn.

The engine sprocket is the smaller one 19 teeth and the pump has 28 teeth. The cylinder has a 20 inch stroke and a 3 1/2 inch bore. There is enough hyd pressure to split a log if you just bump the lever until it splits the log. But if I just psh the lever in or out it will kill the engine even at full throttle. The cylinder seems to meve way to fast.I don't know what the pump is for sure it is inside of the hyd tank and the tank measures about 20 inches long 10 inches high and 12 inches wide.

I just did rough math in my head. See how long it takes the cylinder to extend. I hope about 5 or 6 seconds. Don't slow the pump down any slower than a 1000 and 1200 if you can help it. Of course % of effeciency is not a big thing when you are making firewood. Questions?
