I recently purchased a 4010 D. About two weeks ago suddenly the tractor lost power, would stay running for 1 or 2 minutes then lose power. I changed the fuel filter, bled the fuel system with no help. I was then told to open the fuel return line off the injector pump with immediate return of power. Now my problem is inorder stay running with enough power to do anything I must leave the return line open which of course makes a huge mess. What do I need to do?

Sounds like my 3020 a few years ago- internal parts plugging the return line. 1-800-966-2198 (Mike). Diesel Specialties in Albert Lea, MN. Good, honest advice and accurate repair.

Your excess fuel that should be returning to the tank is building pressure and causing your lack of power. You need to check for a crinkled or plugges return line first. I have heard of this before.

What skip is saying is that the plastic ring inside the governor, which is internal to the fuel pump, has come apart. Small pieces of this ring have plugged up the return line. With the line plugged, the transfer pump can't pump fuel, so the injector pump is starved. I understand this should not be an expensive repair if you shop around. If you check the archives over on the John Deere board some guys have even changed the ring themselves. Hope this helps.

John

Plastic ring has disintigrated as the other two posters say,but it is not a job for someone who is not trained to rebuild the pump.It could wind up costing you a lot more if you try to do it yourself. The sooner you get it rebuilt, the less it could cost since continuing to run the tractor could cause even more damage to the pump.I have rebuilt more than my share of those thinks.
