How many differant jobs have you had, how old where you when you started working and which one did you like and which ones did you hate.
My first paying job was whn I was 12, the good old paper route. My last was truck driveing. If I listed every job I had ever done I would forget at least half of them. The one job I did really like was truck driveing. Shoot back in 1974 I got my first and only new car, Had a 12 month 12,000 warrenty, by the end of the first month I had no more warrenty left.

Wow Old, what a great thread!!!

My best job was when I was 17 working at Fina as a gas jockey as that's where I met my bride of 38yrs. :<) :<) :<)

I had a terrible time finding that job as no one would hire a kid in the big city as at that time you had to be a high school graduate to work at the fast food places. My have things changed. The Scotchman was a very popular buger joint as there was no McDonald's or Pizza Hut, etc; at that time.
Lotta Buger was around tho, a 8" round hambuger.

Jim, the station owner, said he'd take a chance on a kid one more time. We were always looking for the best looking woman of the day. This helped us pass the time as gas was $.19gal and hundereds of cars a day.

One day a woman drove into the self serve and I had bragging rights for the day as she was wearing a skating skirt while filling her tank and needless to say, looked very good from my viewing angle. Jim showed up for work and man I had him going on spotting the best looking chick. Jim kept pumping me for more info about this chick and said hey go clean the islands as I got to call the wife. Cleaning the pump islands was Jim's punishment when ever I spotted the best looking chick.

About 10min latter my best looking chick shows up again, and I go running in to tell Jim, she's back. So were out there giving her the double window cleaning treatment and Jim's making some very forward comments to her. I'm thinking she's going to get out of the car a pop him one.

Well she gets out of the car and Jim indroduces his wife to me!!! Geez they both laughed at me for a very along time. I really didn't think it was too funny at the time.

I've done lawn mowing, roofing, and auto mechanic. Best job I've had is mechanic, worst is mechanic. I work in a new car dealer (we service three car lines) and it used to be "do the job and do it right", now its squeeze every dollar out of each car that you can, no matter what. I really think the dealer is not the place to work for anymore.

Seeing how I"m only 21, I haven"t had too many jobs. When I was little, I helped (got in the way) on my nieghbors farm, had a paper route for a while, folded and staples papers at an office my mom used to work at. During high school I helped on my uncles place, washed cars at the local dealership, worked on my friend"s farm, picked sweetcorn, detassled, work for Culligan Water (water softener/ filtering), summer custodian for two years for the school district, concrete laborer and probably a few more. Went to college to learn masonry (do that on the side), worked at a short line ag dealer at night, worked for a farmer during the fall. After college I baled hay all summer, then I started working for a lumber company near Des Moines, Iowa as a driver"s helper, now I"m a truck driver. I enjoy driving a truck, but can"t compare to farming. Since I was about 10 years old I"ve been building stuff, so i"ve done some roofing, framing, electrical, plumbing, concrete, sheet metal, etc. Jack of All Trades, King of None!!!

I though about becoming an equipment operator, welder, plumber, and many more. One thing I can"t do is work on engines, and I won"t touch a tranny.

I Started mowing grass and driving(steering was about all I did) the hay trucks around the hayfield when I was 10. Worked for a short time picking and washing vegies one summer. Continued working for my families dairy farm/ milk processing operation/ feed business until I was 27 and had had enough of it.(long story for another day) Spent 6+ yrs as a paid call firefighter on a fairly busy dept while I was at the family bus. Moved to Ioway 2++ yrs ago worked full time for a dairy for over a year, now I am somewhat of a mechanic not always by choice just what comes to me, sell new used tractor parts, buy & sell tractors & equip., farm some, ag appraiser in the early stages...Luckily the wife has a good job to support all this....Always been somthin farm related...never really had a "real job"....:)Jim

Worked for a neighboring farm during high school- 1962 to 1966- haying, general farm work, then helping cut and wrap meat when the farmer "vertically integrated". Summer jobs in college- shearing Christmas trees, engineering tech for state Highway Department. Best summer job during college was for my dad, building fence, etc.- he could only afford to pay me for about half time, so the other half was devoted to building a hot rod- put a Chevy 283 V8 in a '36 Chev pickup. That was my best summer- that sucker would sure get sideways in a hurry when I was trying to impress the girls in the local park. After third year of college, Vietnam was calling- so joined National Guard, did Basic Training and Infantry AIT in summer and fall of '69 (Woodstock happened on the weekend of my 21st birthday- I spent that Sunday driving grunts to the Visitors Center in a military bus). Went back to school and got a degree in Oceanography- not realizing that there were no jobs available in the field- so started a fish farm with 4 others similarly situated. Starved out of that and got a job as a Deputy Sheriff in '73 for a year- then got on as a Loan Officer in local Production Credit Association. Did that for 10 years (until 1984), then PCA was about to go broke because of all the bad commercial fishing loans we had made- I was working with an attorney in Seattle on foreclosures of boats, and he commented that I seemed to have a knack for the law. Quit PCA and went to law school, graduated in '87, passed the Bar and went to work for the same attorney. After 3 years, I was disgusted with law in general, and living in Seattle in particular. Went back to Farm Credit System in 1990, and stayed 5 years- until farming in our area completely tanked, and I was layed off in a "downsizing". Unable to find honest work, I opened my own law practice in 1996, and am still at it. I found the law isn't so bad, if you're working for yourself and don't have to answer to greedy "partners" who think only of billing. I don't make big money, but can run it as I like. I do only real estate matters, and get a lot of referrals. Buy, fix and sell some tractors as a hobby. Have made some pretty good real estate investments. Wife of 35 years (as of coming February) has been a dental hygienist since 1971. She raises Paso Fino horses, and has made some money at it. I have an excuse to have lots of tractors, and slip in a few old cars as well. Life is good.

Grew up on a farm, got my first off-our-farm job baling hay for a neighbor. Spent two summers during college working on an assembly line and in parts inspection for a company that makes insecticide foggers. Had a 20-hour-per-week job at a Citgo station my last three years in college.
Became an industrial arts and driver education teacher. Moved back to home community and kept teaching, but farmed part-time with my Dad. Ran a small woodworking business three summers with a partner after Dad retired from farming. Industrial Arts became Technology Education, and I quit the driver's ed thing. In the midst of year 39 of teaching middle schoolers.

I'm a retired third generation adult film maker. Except for nine years in the USAF, I have spent most of my working life living in So. Cal. and involved in the adult film business. I've done just about every job in that industry. My daughter now runs the business and I spend most of my time on my ranch in Colorado, working on old tractors and maintaining my large collection of vintage adult films.

Does working on the family farm count? If it does I've been working there since I was around 10 and I'm 25 now...

When I was 16 I worked for a neighbor running farm equipment - it was OK, but he gave me all the crummy jobs and I burned out in a month.

When I was 18 I washed dishes for 1 day before I quit because it was a rotten job for me.

18 - after washing dishes I got a job in a tire shop fixing/changing tires and light mechanic work while going to college. Did that for about 8 months and then went to a different college.

22-23 - working for another farmer for a couple years. Learned a lot from him.

Now I'm a 6th grade teacher. By far the best job I've had so far - in regards to time off, pay, etc. I would rather farm, but without big time acreage it won't get me where I want to be. So I'm teaching and working with my Dad during my vacations and the summer time.

I have had too many jobs for my age! I am only 28 and have quite a list here...

Busboy, movie rental clerk, cashier, cook, dishwasher, pizza delivery driver, pizza store manager, bank teller, atm repair man, laborer, carpenter, crew forman, lineman's helper, cabinet maker, railroad conductor, Locomotive Engineer, Firefighter. Each of those jobs was like passing through a small town on the way to a final destination. The only ones I held for more than 2 years were the carpenter/crew forman for a home remodeling company, the bank teller, the Conductor/Engineer for the railroad, and I am currently a firefighter in the Nation's Capital. When I hired on the railroad I thought I had found my Career, but my true calling has finally been found in the Fire Dept.

I like Allan's response Old...but anyway....

Lived on a farm till 17.
Stayed in the Army 23 years...retired.
Went to work in DC for a contractor.
Been with a major electric company ever since.

Part time jobs to make ends meet while in the Army include journeyman mortician, drove a hearse, drove a heavy wrecker, drove a semi in Alaska, worked in a Western Auto tire shop in Alaska, sanded and painted boats in Virginia and worked in about as many gas stations as you can count.
Gonna retire one of these days...but am not quite ready yet. Good post...I like these types of topics.

I my area they love to put machines 6 inchs from falling 40-100 feet in to the lake just to put up a condo and in this area you never know when you are going to dig in to a cave and believe me if you do you get to take a heck of a ride LOL

Started off working on my dads farm when I was in diapers did that till I took over the farm when I was 21. It was a part time opertion \, beef and cash crop . Sold out 15 years ago. Started working at fifteen on golf course equipment, pumped gas at nights for couple years.Worked for the International dealer for 8 years got my ticket, got laid off on the early 3eighties anfd started my own busines then. Sold my equipment repair business, went into hydraulics, sold that five years later. Started a tow truck equipment business, sold that and now I just sell towing equipment for some one else .I am starting to get back into the tractor repairs again but only on a part time basis and on the older stuff. My tells me i'm calmer when I work on the old tractors. Must be getting old. so I guess it must be fixing old tractor that I liked the most.Farming was very good to me but just could not get back into again, unless my daughter twists my arm a little

Some things I am sure I will never be are: brain surgeon, president of the US, and retired....and that is the short list.

Fun question, thanks for the trip down memory lane!

To Answer your question, Many Many Jobs... When I was very young, My dad told me to get a job and Stick to it, I thought about that for a long time, and looked at what my dad did for work, I could tell that's all he know for over 65 years. I told myself, No, I'm going to do the opposite, so I did, and NEVER regretted that. I am now retired, and I have 4 craft Licenses and 8 different Crafts over my 55 years of Work History, I've worked for many employeers, Including Two Federal Governement Jobs, and Two State Jobs, I am very happy I did what I did, I saved my own retirement income and now will live happyily every after. So take it from there OLD, your not the only one who's Old and happy as a Lark >>>> Best Regards, Joe

But can say working only a few years at each job sure was nice and help me learn more then I can remember. Sort of doing this to help me remember all the jobs I have had LOL.

Well Old, at least yur Laughing and not crying, that's a plus. but yu know, it's not easy to retire, at age 64, I was working for IBM as Senior Facilities Engineer, and they laid off the whole plant of 1400 people, and sent the work to China. After that, I tried working as the State Housing Development, but I did not care for the job, so just retired, just as well, just as happy.

It has been a good experance through out life and i have seen most of the eastern half of the country . The buying and selling and fixen farm equipment was the most enjoyable and going to all the sales i meet somany good people from ohio , Indiania and Ill. but times are changing and the farm ground is being planted with houses and businesses and the small guys that i delt with are getting out and selling off and never had the kind of money to buy the higher priced stuff that the larger farmers would buy and now far to old to get into a gov. job or shop what littel that are left and i am no steel hauler or frieght hauler . And since the tree huggers got the coal industry about shut down and most of the mills ae gone not much need for and old coal hauler and can't seam to find a job haulen oversized .
