Parting good tractors out.

I'm new to posting on this forum, but a long time user of ebay.

I started selling tractor parts over a year ago, parting the bad ones and saving the potential runners for the cold weather and this winter came up against the sad truth that they are worth a lot more parted out than whole.

I have 6 tractors I bought cheap ($300-600)and thought I'd get them running good, and fix the problem areas and sell them for SOME kind of profit. But at least on that format, nobody is biting. And I have seen them bring more at local auctions.

I guess I can't blame them, buying without seeing, hearing, driving is a big gamble.

So what seems to be the best way to sell? Local trader type paper? Consignment auction?

Maybe I'm too sentimental, but I hate to part out a good running tractor just to make a decent profit.

Well Guys here is how I have to look at it I am disabled and still want,tractors..... I would rather pay a little more and have less work to do....such as I bought a :

'51 Farmall M ,with finders, duall hyd., power stering ,all straght tin, looks to have been kept inside, never repainted, no dripping leaks....95% Firestone tires, all around, 14.9 on rear , new rear rims.....runs....$2,500, delivered 150 miles.....

Late '47 Farmall H very good paint job 8 yrs. ago 4 new tires, finders belt pully, glass precleaner new muffler, new seat cover.....nothing missing ready to show....$2,500 delivered300 miles.....

John deere L A , electric start/ no lights, no hydrolics, no belt pully....90% tires all around ,re painted 6 years ago.looks great,I'll go over it and repaint it later...came with cultivators, plow and poor cycle mower.....$3300 delivered 380 miles.....

'49.Allis G With rebuilt engine,no lights, hydrolics don't work, dead battery, tires bad weather cracked, but hold air...$2700 delivered.330 mi....

I am happy with all three of these deals bought off "PHOTO ADS"....

I asked the fellow that we deal with occasionally how he felt about the very same thing you're talking about. He told me once he had mixed emotions about parting out a tractor. But... he told me that doing THAT gives him the opportunity to help someone bring back to life a tractor that is still loved.

Can't argue with that.

Yeah, I used to try to fix em up and re-sell but I endend up giving my labor away. I still sell a few as-is for a small profit and the rest I knock em in the head and never look back. I just tell myself I'm helpin someone bring one back from the dead.

It is a rough way to try and make any money as i did it for 19 years and ou realy have know the market and what to buy and when not to buy and what you can afford to fix and what not to fix . I always bought I H tractors that needed clutches and T/A's but had a good sound engine and rearend as for the transmission ya never knew till ya got in there . Fixen lights a new seat doing a tune up adjusting valves fixing leaks checking the hdy system and fixing it a real good paint job and testing the tractor to make sure that it is feild ready and standing behind your work for a short pieord and giving a warranty on the clutch and T/A . I always used premium parts and made a decent profit over cost a lot of the equipment went to friend and is still in use . now i have end up with some real junkers that were not worthe fixen and end up taking a thumpen but that is part of the learning experince . Some days penuts somedays shells.

Scott, I think part of the problem is these ridiculous fuel prices we have right now, the tractors you are selling might be well worth what you are hoping for, but no one can afford the expense of going after them.

Rusty, I have to agree with you. In 2004 I sold 4 or 5 tractors and in 2005 I sold one. Something about the cost of going to look and then pick up and hauling them back home. But its also been hard to find any to buy this past year. Seems like no one wants to buy or sell or it did last year hope this year gets better.

I use the ads on this site, I've had tractors go to 4 or 5 differant states so far. I don't make a killing when I sell one but I do come out ahead at least in the $$ but if I charged for the hours I put in then I wouldn't sell them because I'd have to charge way to much for them. I figure I might make $0.50-2 and hour if I'm lucky.

Scott, the tractors will sell if they are priced right. The problem is that it is hard to sell them at a low price if you have to do much repair to them. If you don't enjoy working on the tractors it's not worth it to fix and sell. I enjoy seeing the old tractors come back to life and that's why i do it. This site is best to sell non running tractors but ebay is better selling the tractors in pretty good condition at least in my experence.
