We dairy in North Carolina. Price of milk fluctuates monthly.Through November, this year averages $15.63/cwt. 2004 averaged $16.83/cwt. ( included in that price is a .25/cwt quality premium). From those prices deductions for national advertising-- .15/cwt ; a charge for hauling of milk to processing plant-- .71/cwt. In November a hauling fuel surcharge was authorized by the co-op. It was .15/ cwt. So about $1.00/cwt is now deducted from the "pay price" to the farmer. 2002 and 2003 prices were much lower- $12 to $13 range. It was tough. In 2004 May and June price hit $20.00/cwt up from $12-13 range of 2003. Farmer price went up $7-$8/cwt- retail price went up $18.00/cwt same period. Farmer price quickly dropped back to $16, retail price dropped a little but nowhere near as much as it had increased.

Everything I read is forecasting price to drop $1.50 or so for 2006.This on top of increased cost of fuel and fertilizer, etc. is going to make for a tough year. Already seeing some auction flyers for dairy dispersals and have heard of others already sold privately.

Got 16.94 for Novembers milk. Not as bad as it was few years ago. I'm 29 and have been milking my own herd of 50-70 Jerseys since August 2000.

ILL John, Know the feeling well. I grew up in McHenry County. We milked 33-35 cows on 200 acres. Worked as a hired hand on dairy farm until 1950, when I went in service. Do not regret no more milking, was the hardest money I ever earned. I don't know if there are any dairies left around that part of the country. Seems to be all small places 10-40 acre parcels now with horses. Chuck

About the same thing you were getting in 1967.
Problem is everything else went up.

Lets see..... ....
I just paid $3.59 for a gallon of milk today.
That's about $44cwt and the farmer gets $14cwt.
Now tell me who is making all the money on milk.

And my Dad's generation wonders why all the son's want nothing to do with a dairy.

I grew up milking 20-25 BEFORE school and AFTER school. When I graduated, I left for California, couldn't get a job so joined the Navy. SURE didn't want to go back to Iowa and milk cows again. I'm retired now and haven't milked since 1960, I think the price has gone down compared to the 60s. SURE am glad someone, some of my friends now, still do that for a living!! 1 family dairy farm left in this county and 1 commercial herd, Lake county Illinois. John
