Hi Everyone.
The backhoe search has become a better process.
I have increased my financial limits, and narrowed
my choices down alot. Not being a tractor guy Im sure Im still gonna get smacked around with repairs, BUT my knowledge and new found wisdom
( thanks to many of you here ) has kept my wallet closed and my eyes wider open.
Just another question ..... what about JCB ???
Ace

There are quite a few JCB's around my area. They tend t o be cheaper than comparable Cat's or Ford's or Deere's. I don't think that there was anything in particular wrong with the early JCB's, but they don't command much price here. It's probably partly to do with the Leland engines. That's more of a parts cost/availability issue than reliability, I think. The later models were Perkins powered, and for the most part, the machines are quite well respected.
Also bear in mind that the Cat hoes had a Ford powertrain and Perkins engine, set in a Cat frame. Watch the brakes on the Cats. A lot of guys used Cat TO-2 in the machines around here, and that isn't sufficient for the Ford brakes without the friction modifier additive, which a lot of them didn't use either. Again, I think you would be better served by evaluating each machine on it's own merits, mechanically. In the price range you're at, there could be anything wrong with any of the models you're looking at..... and any one could bite you, and any one could be the best purchase of your life. FWIW,

Rod

i don't have any practical knowledge of the JCB machine, but i was in your position 5 or 6 years ago and was advised not to buy one as their earlier machines were of inferior quality. I looked at a lot of machines before settling on a 1988 416 Cat that had what seemed like a ton of hours on it (9000) but turned out to be an exellent machine. In my search,I found Cat machines to be of a higher quality and superior design. My 2 pennies.

My buddy has one and I love to drive and use it. The avail. of repair parts is supposed to be better now than a few years back.
