Have a freind in trucking business whos starting to sell oil products now. Just unsure what exact oil is right for my tractors. He's selling Texaco products, does anyone use their stuff or have opinions?

Tractors include, NewHolland TM115, Hesston 130-140 (both these near 5500 hours) , Hesston 666, (about 4k) , and an old Leyland 270 (way up there on hours!) I'm up in cold Canada, but only the NH runs in the winter.

We use Texaco Ursa 10w-40 in our equipment at the golf course where I work. We have lots of extremely hot hours of operation and have had no oil related problems. I finally persuaded them to use only one oil for both the gasoline and diesel engines and that solved a lot of supply problems. Only problem is it still walks off the shelf in the bottles.

I used to use Ursa in my diesel, now Rotella just because that's what our Sam's sells now. The guy that rebuilt the engine recommended Ursa, but said Rotella was fine. All to say, if you use Ursa you'll do ok. And the bear and constellation are cool, too.

Paul,

I believe URSA is Texaco's equivalent to Shell Rotella 15-40 & Chevron DELO. We use the Rotella for our diesel tractors and trucks. Our '95 6.5 Suburban is pushing 220,000 miles and our '01 Power Stroke is at 110,000 miles and both have used Rotella for every mile. I'd bet that the URSA has the same specs as the Rotella.

Any of the major brands that are rated CH or CJ (I think that is the latest Diesel rating)are fine. Texaco makes a good product. I like synthetics for cold weather use and use Shell Rotella T Synthetic in my Cummins. You can get oils as good, but you'd be hard put to find a better oil than Shell Rotella.

If you are more familiar with Chevron products, they are the same with diff. labels.

Yes, Texaco Ursa has always been good technology. Shell Rotella is very popular, in part due to many millions spent in advertising it to truckers, but it is a very good oil for diesels and HD gas. Chevron Delo 400, as well as Conoco Power D, employ "Group 2" base oil technology in their 15W/40's, and Shell, Mobil and most others will have some catching up to do to meet or exceed their quality levels at this time. The difference is minute, but Chevon and Conoco have spent millions in refining technology that Shell and others have not in recent times. Delo is factory fill at Perbilt and Kenworth for about 15 years now. It's very excellent.

OOO - and while hydrocracked - Group II - oil has been available for decades for limited applications, Conoco was the first to put it to trial on a wide-spread heavy duty use. They had to buy a bunch of engines that time.

Mobil have been using group IIs for 7 or 8 years now. They are phasing out much of the Exxon line this spring. Mobil is factory fill for Cat and Cummins.

Shell is pretty much about the worse oil money can buy due to the inconsistancy of the product, however it has done a great job of PR.

First I heard of a 7 or 8 year run with Delvac having Group II base oil. I also have not heard the story of Conoco buying engines due to some problem with their group II oil. I heard the story a few times, of Conoco buying the technology from Chevron and Petro Canada, on how to refine Group II. The hydrocracked method is considerably different than the old Solvent extraction method, and expensive to convert, that being why many are dragging their feet. The 5W/30 oils recommended for many of the newer cars cannot be blended using group I oils, there is a distinct quality difference with Group II versus Group I, but I will have to confirm that with Mobil Oil about Delvac being blended with the Hydrocracked oil. First time I heard that, and you say 7 or 8 years? Chevron was about the first, don't think they have 7 or 8 years yet.
