we are buying a new truck F350 question to all who have used them off road ( mud snow etc ) what is the weight of the int. diesel compared to the ford V/8 gas and does the added weight cause off road-- also we have a 3/4 ford now and it is very good- frame twist etc- it will go any where ? will the 350"s frame be too rigid to make it good on uneven ground????

I currently drive a "05 F-250 4x4 Diesel. It is by far the worst truck I have ever drove in the mud. The extra weight makes it harder to handle in the mud and if you ever start to spin your wheels you are in trouble. The front end will bury itself in a hurry. I have had this one stuck twice since I owned it. The Dodge 1 ton diesel I used to drive handled much better in muddy conditions and had more power.

thanks guys-- we ae buying this to replace an F250 off road tk for our fire co. brush fires etc. we have a 2001 w/ the 7.s and it works fine for over the road emergency tk- but I think you are right the gas 6 spd. would be better as a match for the old tk; our old tk is a 1972 F260 w/ a 360 4 spd. w/ only 7000K on it - it works fine goes anywhere- but it is time to replace it-- thanks again

If you are buying based on weight dont. If you do work in the boon docks there are 1 of 2 ways you use a truck. You use the truck to drive out to the dozer etc or you use the truck to pull coils of wire etc out into the boon dock. If your putting weight on the truck and pulling with it dont worry about the little extra weight of the diesel. If you just use it as transportation to the dozer who cares you have the dozer right? Really 500 lbs wont make an ounc of difference, good agressive tires are what will make you get there or not. The only advantage of a gas vs. a diesel is you can wind htem up a bit more in the mud and htey dont mind as much but weight shouldnt make a difference.

If you are buying a BRAND NEW Ford than DO NOT get the Diesel. From what I've read here and the problems the neighbor has has DON'T get one of those. They changed the whole engine and ruined a good thing !

Hi Mike,

I think that the first year the 6 L came out (2003?) there were a fair percentage of these trucks that were lemons. Problems with the computer as I recall. However, my brother bought one of the first year 6L trucks and has had not problems at all, and a friend bought one the second year they were out, and also has had no problems.

I think it was a hit or miss thing, with a much lower percentage of lemons compared to the first year or two.

I don't think there is anything different between an F-250 and F-350 aside from heavier suspension in the F-350.

I have the "older" diesel (from 2001, 7.2 liters I think vs. 6.0 currently) and I think it is great. As far as for off-road use, it you are wanting to go like a bat our of hell off road, you would probably be better off with a gas engine which reaches peak HP at higher RPMs, and is lighter in weight.

If you want to go along at a nice pace, the diesel may be just the thing. I have the 6-sp standard transmission ... Put it in low gear (or even low-low 4wd) and it crawls along without even haveing your foot on the accelerator. Lots of weight up front for traction on that end too.

The IH Diesel in the Ford weighs about 500 lbs more than the gasser. The extra weight of the Diesel up front does cause some difficulty in off road boondock work, so if I were to do a lot of heavy boondocking, I'd use a gasser because of the lighter weight. My 4WD is for snowy roads, thus the extra weight is not as much of a factor. For this reason, I feel that 4WD is a must for a Diesel because of all the front weight. As for frame flexing, I don't think that makes that much of a difference, unless you are boulder crawling in the Baja, but as said above, if you are boondocking where that might be a factor, then I would recommend a gasser because of the weight factor. Also, a no-spin diff is a must with a Diesel, to help push that extra weight up front. Hope this helps.
