686 IH questions

Here are some questions about the 686 IH I posted about last week. My brother has it home over the weekend to try it out. Here are a couple things we noticed:

1. the steering wheel has to be slowly, but steadily turned to the left to keep the tractor steering straight. Approx. 360 rotation in 1/4 mile at highway speed. Why is it doing that?

2.Can hear a quiet whine noise from the transmission area when moving and not moving. Any reason for concern?

3.I thought it had excessive blowby out the breather, but we discovered it is only when at an idle. When at operating speed, you can't see any smoke from the tube. Is this reason for concern?

4. TA seems to be very good.

We are new to IH. I really appreciate any advice you can give. Price is $10,000. What do you think?

I know rarity and popularity have something to do with tractor prices, but it takes a pretty good 1086 to bring $10000.

Well it sounds like the steering problem is just that , now it could be the hand pump or a leaking steering cylinder . The wine that your telling us about sounds like a hdy. bypassing some where . And as far as the price well i would tell the dealer to stuff it where the sun does not shine . it is in my opinion that that thractor is 4000 over priced . As far as wanting a 310 well they are a good engine BUT They are going the way as the old D248-281's as fisrt off injection pump parts are getting real hard to find they do not make the thermostat for them anymore and unless ya work the snot out of them they slobber and have blowby because the rings are not being forced out against the cylinder walls . But this is my opinion .

I bought my 666, which is basically the same tractor, about a year ago for $5000.00. It is a real good tractor. Mine also has blowby at idle, which concerned me. It goes away when it's working and It doesn't use any oil. I'm real happy with it. I didn't want to get in the money part, although I thought it a little high. Some people value things more than others. I look for deals, I got 2 Super A's free for hauling them off. Neither one run. Hope Allen doesn't see this,He'll be jealous.

My opinion is that you would be nuts for buying that tractor for that price. By the sounds of it, its grossly overpriced, and I would keep looking. A 686 is an alright tractor, but if I wanted a 310 german engined tractor, I would go for a 756- ALOT better tractor, and alot more weight behind it. Great brakes too, something that 686 is lacking. My two cents though....

I'm with the others thinking 10 grand is high for a that tractor. The steering problem will only get worse. Leaking past the steering valve in the steering wheel end of the circuit. Had an Oliver 1750 that the wheel would be like that when it was just warmed up.Would get worse and worse as the day wore on. After working all day you could go round and round just to keep it straight! It was a real pain to operate having to constantly turn the wheel. Finally had it fixed cost around $1000 or better as I recall.

Hmmmm,

Guess I'm odd man out on this one or maybe it is because I just walked thru this same ordeal of reworking a 686 myself.

But, if that tractor is as straight as you say, has the 310 diesel and the only problem is a little 39 cent steering drift to it, I'd have the bill of sale by now.

Heck, that engine alone, if in good shape, is worth $4700 and they are one of the finest sized tractors IH ever put out.

But, they are a workhorse, not a lawn mower.

Dunno,

Allan

Hello and Merry Christmas!. Sounds like you got yourself a dupont restoration, not a throughly gone through machine. Something like the steering problem should have been fixed because thats obviously not right. I'd say one of the valves has a leak and it's leaking oil back into the syestem instead of holding it when the steering wheel is kept straight. The whine could be it is the hydrolic pump and it's alittle low on oil, although thats usually a louder whine, it will make a quieter whine when it's cold out before the tractor gets warmed up when it's cold out, then the whine goes away. I've seen alot of tractors smoke alittle out the crankcase breather, so that wouldn't concern me as much as how well the engine cold starts. Local dealer would dyno test it for you for I think around $40, atleast thats what my local Case IH dealer charges. For the T/A, i've always heard to test that by trying both high and low in probably 2nd gear, and mash on the brakes, if it starts to instantly kill the engine, then its good if not, then it's not so good, and if it won't kill the engine at all, then it's bad. I think $10,000 is too high for anything less than about perfect to be honest with you. Your only looking at a 60-70hp tractor, and the 86 series were kinda big and I don't have a clue what it is you want to do, but perhaps you'd like a 684 or a 784 instead? as those were real nice utility tractors and definatly would fit in places a 686 would not and would give you the same hp.

The 686 was made in the late '70's.
It has 66.3 p.t.o. H.P.

I don't know much about them, but I'm thinking that 10K for one is high, maybe 4K to 6K for a nice one is more in line.
