That Gleaner looks mighty fine with that pretty red lady in the background....Ready to pull her out when it gets too wet. Way back in the early '80's we had one of those..pretty good combine.

Hey Allan...how's the temp out your way? I'm setting at a computer in sunny SW Florida....temp? A balmy 70 degrees! Hope you all have a great Christmas! ( on a business trip checking out old iron, you know!)

Allen- Where is all the snow at? Shouldn't you have some by now? I live in southern Ontario and we have 8-10 inches on the ground. Your pictures look good.

Hi Brian,

All we've had so far is a skif and a lot of cold weather. Finally got up to 51 here today, tho.

That's okay. It can stay just like this 'til April and then start raining fer a month if it wants. :>)

Hi Neighbor,

Yep, that's the last item on the list and I've been lookin' for a year now; just can't find one.

If I ever do hook up with some old darlin' somewhere, I will have then come full circle and am all ready for the hailstorms to start in on me once again. :>)

Hi Ol' Bud,

Yep, that's why I like the 6 pop diesel. Last one I had would run more like a week on a tankful. If I remember right, it is about 80 horse or so.

The heads are quick-attach. If the weeds get too bad in the oats, I'll have to swath 'em and use the pickup head after they've dried out; otherwise, I'd just as soon use the direct cut head and be done with it.

I think this first year I'll just leave the straw chopper off and bale all the straw, since we're starting from scratch again.

Hi JD,

It is just a little 13' grain table that has been gutted of the reel and sickel so it will accept the mounting of a windrow pickup.

Used for swathed and windrowed crops out in these parts. Oats and dry beans usually.

If a guy doesn't have two heads, then ya have to swap the pickup on and off between swathed and direct cut crops. Kind of a PITA.

Allan

It has been half a life time since I saw a windrow header with skids as opposed to wheels. Around here it turned out that skids plus the odd small stone plus hot weather plus speed equalled sparks which used to lead to some bad fires.

Lots of pick-up heads in the Willamette Valley in western Oregon for the grass seed crops, as well. Out here, we actually have pretty dry summers so no problem direct-cutting the grain. In fact, I've never seen grain swathed in this country.

Hi Mike,

We usually use oats as a nurse crop for alfalfa.

By swathin' the oats just when they start to turn, not only does a guy get a kill on any weeks pokin' there heads up, but it also gives a jump on the alfalfa.

With any luck, one gains a cutting off that new alfalfa crop.

Neighbor here in Ohio a few years back thought he was going to swathin the wheat to get a head start on double crop soybeans, swathed the wheat and got heavy rain, not only lost his wheat crop but did not get in his double crop beans, only year he ever tried that
