Hauled in an old car body today to the scrappers. Sitting in one pile of stuff was an Allis WD or one like that. Hood was gone but frame and engine block was there. Also a good rear tire on a good spin out rim. There was also an 8N ford there also. Asked about buying them and they told me once its on there lot it has to go out as scrap and can not be had. Boy I wish I could sit there and watch for things like that coming in.

Must tell a better story or shut up right? Well my nephew works for Green Giant, and they bought a small cannery in MN near his home town that in the past had many JD tractors. The day before his two week vacation he found a pallet of JD new carburators for the 2 cylinders, and a pallot of new Mags, he told the crew not to let anyone so much as breath on those two pallets. When he got back they were no where to be found and was told they went to a junk yard in Iowa, and they named the junk yard--so happens the junk yard was 5 hrs away--seemed odd, but better yet it was fifteen miles from his grandparents. That was five years ago and not a trace, or a straight answer of any kind. I know some of the guys at the scrap yard, and no one knows of any such event. Can you imagine how popular he or I could have been---move over Bill Gates. Dave NE IA

Oooh, you had to remind me!

My granddad had a 2N with a 6 cylinder Funk conversion. My aunt wound up with it, which is fine. But then she traded it in on a new chinese tractor. I've tried to track it down, but the dealer is no longer in business.

I tracked down the owner of the dealership and he remembers the tractor. He even gave me information on the buyer. It was sold on a contract basis: $500 down and $100/month. The guy disappeared and the dealer never saw a dime after the $500 down payment. I have addresses for the thief but they are bogus.

My aunt hated the tractor and said the way to find it is to listen carefully for someone cursing loudly. That person will likely be the owner of the tractor!

My brother makes the rounds of scrap yards looking for pilfered oil field equipment, he has found many pilfered items over the years, along with some really nice stuff that you wouldn't think people would sell for scrap. One of which is an original Sharps 50-110 that he paid 90 cents for. He shoots the old Sharps just about every weekend.

It's not a 50-110, it's a 50-70.

Last I knew, a tractor salvage yard in Butler, MO had the corner on the tractors and equipment going to the Ft. Scott yard. Austin Salvage is the name, I believe.

I have known the Austins for many years and was to their place just last Friday. They have saved a few items out of the Ft Scott,KS yard but like everyone else they are no longer allowed to buy anything there.

It all gets scrapped now!!What a shame!

The junk yard at Ft Scott,KS will no longer sell stuff thats brought in.You cant even look around. They used to sell for 10 cents a lb,then 15 cents, but now will longer will sell anything.

A decent LA Case tractor and 35 Massey SP combine will be junked soon.In the past 3 years they have junked a complete MD Farmall,TD-9 IH Crawler, and gobs more.

A friend named off a list a mile long of tractors, combines, plows, trucks, etc that they have junked in the past 2-3 years. Most were good for parts and some could have been restored.

People are stupid to sell collectable stuff for $70 a ton.People sell them 100 lb IH suitcase weights that pullers will pay $35-50 each for.

I agree with you and I do all I can to stop them from being scrapped but I can't do much. In my area theres 2 radio station with ad programs and I call in off and on looking for dead tractors and do at times get a few calls. And have even picked up a few that way.

When my Dad was alive we would go to the city dump around lunch time when the workers were at lunch after we dumped our trash Dad would look for scrap iron. One time the workers said we had to stop that. On another time at the dump we saw the workers collecting scrap iron for them selves. The workers may have their own outlet for the tractors. Stan

I wouldn't blame the scrapyard so much as the people bringing itmes in that they could sell for more elsewhere.

It seems reasonable to me that the scrapyard doesn't want their employees distracted by people coming around trying to buy stuff, taking the time to pull things apart, risking injury, keeping track of receipts, etc. That's not the business they are in.

May sound silly but alot of these corporations policies are dictated by thier lawyers. I wouldn't be surprised if they were worried about a law suit from somebody being injuried by an old piece of equipment without much in the way of safeties. The way society is today, some people will sue over just about anything, even thier own stupidity.

Legal hassles probable- Madison, Wi area scrap yard that I used to get steel pieces for welding repairs, trailer making had to stop sales couple years back after state said they might be taken to court for damages if accident happened. They were called into court on a couple cases for auto parts salvaged instead of scrapped so no sales for that either anymore, no license for retail sales/parts salvage. Check if state laws on licensing for retail sales apply to yard- not worth the risk to make unlawful sale. RN.

Probably one of those outfits that's owned by outside corperation and run by hired help. Too much chance for the help to sell off stuff and pocket the money. I'd try to find out who is hauling in and deal with them directly.

Hey Rich, if they wouldn't sell them there must be something wrong. Somebody else already got the concession on used tractors there no doubt.
I would check back again and find a different person and see what they sez....

Don't know why they wouldn't sell it. Don't know the current prices, but here they give you say a nickel a pound going in and charge you a quarter a pound going out.

Yea you know that the scrap doesn't pay squat. I can't figure out why these junk haulers take tractors in there ? At least in my area one guy was able to save an old Reed (?) oil field engine he was able to buy it back out of the junk yard. Once was a JD 840 model scraped there too. At least I caught wind of it and was able to tell some of my tractor buddies and they were able to buy some useable parts back off of it.

I think the problem with them is there not a junk yard but a metals dealer and thats why they will not resale once they have something.

A big company took over a local scrap yard and they won't even let you in to look around anymore.A local car junkyard does this to,you have to be with an employee to be on there property.
