Did any other manufacturers in tractor history use the low RPM, two cylinder engine design that Deere is famous for? Just curious.

The LaCross Happy Farmer had a 2 cylinder horisontal engine on a 3 wheel design, 2 in furrow, and the one my neighbor had I never heard it run and was sold when he passed away in 59 and had sat out for several years before but that tractor I was told was a 1919 model and he had some other parts I was told was from a 1917 model

Remember, John Deere bought out Waterloo tractor company and put there name on it. I see no glory in taking credit where it"s not due. As far as the sound, I"d say my Harley get"s close :)

Yes, Deere technically "bought" the two-cylinder design. But of course there were several two-cylinder manufacturers at that time, and Deere stayed with the concept (and in business) longer than any of them, vastly updating and improving the two-cylinder concept over the next several decades. And was VERY successful with it, so if you want to not give credit where it isn't due, you should also be willing to give it where it IS due.

Your quite right G/MAN. My blood runs red but I always wanted a JD general purpose unstyled tractor with spoke wheels. I think with some serious motor work, they not only look good they really sound good. I also like the sound of a Super M when it"s hopped up as well. Merry Christmas.

Case 20-40, 12-25, 30-60. Fired on every stroke, put, put, put, put. Not put, put, skip, skip, skip, put, put like JD.

Until a couple years ago, I had a 18-36 Hart-Parr with a 2 cyl. sounded a lot like a old JD-D. Had over 600cid. would out pull any D on steel in the local antique tractor pull

The early IH used a two cylinder but they were on the same crank throw so it would fire every other revolution rather than the putput putput of JD they went putt putt putt putt. There were ballance issues with this single throw though. Then McCormick had a prototype that looked like a cross between a D JD and a 15-30 Mc-Deering. It had a big spoked hand start flywheel on the side. There were others too. An early Avery and Rumely I believe were two poppers and others of that era.

Rumely Oil Pulls were quite similar to John Deere"s design which came from the Waterloo Boy tractor that they (JD) bought. Also some early Hart-Parr"s were 2 cylinders. Someone else might know of others. John L.

If I were starting them and they started as easily as mine.....

... They would sound just like that; Except for the wheezing old geezer standing beside em.
